Just wondering what does anybody do for their mail carrier at Christmas?

Check out my site at http://susieed.tripod.com/

Thanks, Sue Edelmann
1|1|I dont give monetary gifts to the carrier....they probably make more than I do! LOL I dont do homebaked stuff because some people are funny about that.. I have 2 regular carriers, both ladies, last year I made up gift bags with things like the instant hand warmers (like hunters use), earmuffs, gloves, teabags and hot cocoa with a travel mug ....they seemed to like them :) They are sweet ladies, always leave my doggies treats in the mailbox, lol|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|11:46:32|12/14/2008|

Havent decided on what I'm giving them this year....maybe a gift card to the Shell station here in town so they can stop for something to drink or food on their route...our Shell station has the best food! Chicken tenders, pizza, sandwiches and soup.....plus the full array of cocoa, coffees, etc. :)

is "speedy gonazales"! We always joke that Jerry (the mailman) has a remote for the mailboxes as seems he flies up to them and is gone in a flash! He is a great guy though..couldn't ask for a nicer mail carrier. :) 3|1|I don't give anything....|kellysp6637|frugalk76@aol.com|12:35:23|12/14/2008|

first they are federal employees so they are not supposed to accept gifts over a certain amount of money....(I think it's capped at $20) and

second,,,,,my mail is almost always delivered to someone else on my road...so I have to track it down...

third...I practically never see my mail person since they don't even come down my road...(I live on a long dirt road) so there is a large locked mail receptacle at the end of the road with separate boxes in it...

I do give to:

My children's teachers
Bus driver
school nurse
day care teachers

8|2|They can accept gifts, I asked my BIL who is a carrier for over 20 yrs. And I like to leave my carriers something because they do a great job....the quantity of mail I get is above the norm, and they never complain or do a sloppy job of it :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|14:04:31|12/14/2008|

I am a federal employee and have been for the last seven years...it's pretty well understood in my agency that accepting gifts over a certain denomination can put my job at risk...this information was copied from a website regarding gifts for postal carriers:

This is from the USPS website:

Question
Can US Postal Service employees receive gifts from customers?

Answer
Gifts to Postal Service Employees
While many Postal Service™ customers have traditionally thanked their mail carrier with gifts of cash during the holiday season, this practice puts our employees at risk of violating federal law. The Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch ("Standards"), specifies that Postal Service employees may not accept gifts from outside sources (including Postal Service customers) or gifts given to them because of their official positions. Postal Service employees are also prohibited from soliciting gifts from outside sources.

There are a number of exceptions and exclusions to the general gifts rule. Postal Service employees may accept the following items:

* Snacks and beverages that are not offered as part of a meal.
* Items with little intrinsic value (i.e., greeting cards, plaques, pens, coffee mugs, etc.).
* Perishable items (i.e., flowers, chocolates, cookies, etc.); if the items are clearly worth more than $20, employees should share them with others in the Postal Service workplace.
* Items with a market (retail) value of $20 or less.
* Gifts motivated solely because of a personal relationship.
* Gifts for which the employee has paid market (retail) value.
* Gifts paid for by the Postal Service.
* Postal Service employees may not accept cash - in any amount or form (bills, checks, money orders) - from an outside source.

For further information, please contact the U.S. Postal Service® Law Department’s Ethics Helpline at 202-268-6346, or send an email message to ethics.help@usps.gov.
11|4|I knew about those guidelines, that is why I chose the gifts I did in the past for the carriers. I think common sense and budgeting would all but eliminate extravagant gifts for postal carriers, lol. My BIL says the gifts he recieves average around $10 in value, rarely does he get cash, but he does get gift cards. As a nurse, I am not allowed to accept money or 'gifts' from patients or their families....but dont think we turn our noses up at a home baked treat or cheese and sausage tray this time of year LOL :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|14:48:42|12/14/2008|

ETA: I should have said "rarely does my BIL get offers of a cash gift"....if he does, he declines it. I consulted him years ago when I started giving gifts to the carriers. :)

I always give treats, not just Christmas, but other holidays or when I make cookies, etc. We just moved here, but at our previous house, I got the BEST service from both of these people, and I am sure it was from me 'remembering' them with goodies. In the summer, I always offered our mailman a cold soda if he had to come to the door for something too. Our new mailman is really young and not very friendly so I have not done much other than the holiday gift, which is those big Hersheys bars.

Merry Christmas!
Stacey =)
