24 0|0|How much to have a tooth pulled ???|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|10:42:43|12/14/2008|
Posted on Dec-14-08 at 10:42 AM (Eastern) by 205.188.116.68

I have a tooth that absolutely has to be pulled, it's beginning to affect my jaw (I have TMJ to begin with and this inflamed tooth is making it 20x worse).

I've been on a waiting list for blue cross insurance for about 8 months, and I've been holding out hoping it would come through, but it could be another 4 to 6 months before it does (they have a 1-year+ waiting list from what I understand).

I don't think the tooth is infected YET, but it's only a matter of time.

I realize it varies from town to town, and what you have done, but just wanting a roundabout idea of what this is gonna cost me -$300 or $1200, kwim? And please tell me if you had it done just with novacaine or were you put to sleep.

BTW, I've looked for a dental school near me with no luck - the closes one is 5 hours away.

Thanks everyone for some advice!

lauren 1|1|ooh, and recommendations for pain relief until i have it pulled|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|10:45:25|12/14/2008|

I tried advil which worked for a while but now doesn't even touch the pain now. I started trying tylenol today, seemed to help a bit.

I rarely take OTC pain meds, so I really don't know what is supposed to work for what, so suggestions please.

this was very recent ..and I thought that was a lot.altho havent had a tooth pulled in yrs.so maybe it isn't..same dentist on the 1st visit was a little over $600 for a cleaning(not many teeth left)and xrays.. now that was a lot I think 3|2|that's not too bad to me except......|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|11:02:36|12/14/2008|

Posted on Dec-14-08 at 11:02 AM (Eastern) by 205.188.116.68

that I know they'll insist on an initial visit with xrays and all before actually pulling it....that's where the money's gonna add up I'm afraid.

It's been a little over a year I think since I had a cleaning and xrays, so I wonder if they would let me get away with just using the existing xrays instead of new ones....hmmm, gotta go look up when I had that done.

lauren 4|2|around here..its around $125 to $150.....|couponsnsamples|cpsnsamples@aol.com|11:03:59|12/14/2008|

lauren 14|1|according to my dentist, bc/bs woudln't cover the tooth anyway (M)|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|18:46:38|12/14/2008|

Posted on Dec-14-08 at 06:46 PM (Eastern) by 24.129.66.182

bc/bs of florida (anyway) requires once dental insurance is purchased, that the patient get an immediate (withint 2 weeks) full mouth write up including xrays and the dentists finding written down. (this is paid for by bc/bs) anyway, anything that is written up ont he report OTHER than a cleaning is considered PRE-EXHISTING and thus bc/bs will NOT cover the procedures.

so don't bother waiting for the ins to go through, it mat not do you any good anyway.

do yourself a favor thoguh.......... call dentists, tell them what is going on and ask the receptionist if the dr. will even pull the tooth if it CAN be saved. some won't. i paid for 5 exams before i found one here in jax that WOULD pull a tooth even though it could be saved. it has to do with the hipacratical oath they take. some will do it and some won't.

hth and good luck!

About them not pulling a tooth that can be saved. I swore after my first and last time I had root canal that I would NEVER have it done again and they would have to pull my tooth.....it never occurred to me that a dentist would refuse to pull it.

I had my first one about 35 years ago and swore I would never do it again Then alas, about a year ago, the opportunity presented itself and during the consult they assured me I would not feel a thing. I was doubly concerned cuz it was a top tooth. But, I was there for 2 hours, didn't feel a thing; went home with painkillers I never used and all in all - it was less disturbing than a cleaning.

So, never say never.

Of course, it IS more expensive than an extraction!!!

I agree with Jackie however -- they will NOT pull a tooth if it is salvageable -- which is why I had the root canal. It was either that or let it sit in my head until it rotted completely and, like someone else mentioned, then you are tampering with your heart!

Go get the tooth fixed and you'll be fine!!!
18|2|yeah Robin, i've reconsidered the root canal route in recent years|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|12:49:25|12/15/2008|

So many people have told me in recent years that their root canal was no big deal that I've come to the conclusion that either I had a really lousy doctor or that their methods just weren't as good back then.

What I remember were these really long pins that they had to stick down into the root to get the root out, and even though they assured me it wouldn't hurt, it did. Oweeeee!

lauren 19|3|Yeah, that was my first experience too!!!|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|13:34:24|12/15/2008|

But much much better now. But it took me 35 years to get the nerve up to do it again. 20|1|OK.... I've had both (extraction and root canal in last few years)|Abbicca|Abbicca@bellsouth.net|17:44:15|12/15/2008|

My extraction AFTER insurance was around $250-$300...but I had to go to a specialist because it was split all the way through, etc etc.

My root canal was just a few months ago---in a front tooth (single root---thankfully). Apparently my roots were just a tad too long for the 'electric/automatic' tools and I did indeed get the varying files inserted and the root dug out manually...... BUT I had no pain whatsoever---never used a single one of the pain pills. And amusingly enough....after insurance the root canal cost LESS than the extraction---go figure!!

I agree with the others---call around and get a good ballpark idea. There is no set price---and while I was waiting to see the dentist..there were numerous calls of that nature coming in---so they're used to it! 21|2|in WV it is $76 if you don't have insurance|grumpy57|mcquain3@verizon.net|21:22:34|12/15/2008|
