Ice storm - no power, no phone, (using blackberry to sen this) no sump pump and watr pouring in. Over 4" in basement and about a foot of water in bakcyard. Trees down everywhere. Our three big maples are destroyed with huge branches everywhere. Dh moved his car 15 mins before huge branch came down. If he hadn't the car would be crushed. Freezing! Still pouring out and so dangerous with big trees dropping branches left and right. 1|1|Robin stay inside cuddle in the blankees and stay safe|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|10:05:01|12/12/2008|

If you keep it closed, it will prob be fine. if nothing else, i would fill some small coolers w/ ice, sounds like you have plenty of it outside and place inside the freezer.

Any meat, put in a big cooler if you have it and put it in your trunk or garage w/ a thermometer so you can periodically check the temps of it.

We went thru a bad ice storm a few years ago and my MIL who was out for 8 days was able to salvage all of her freezer items by doing the above. Nothing even defrosted in the freezer, including her ice cream LOL. And the expensive cuts of meat went into her garage in a cooler, then the cooler into a big tote and then she just kept putting snow and ice around it w/ some heavy blankets over the top. Never defrosted either.

Good luck!!

It's my only connection to the outside world. Sarah, glad you posted. I was worried about you!! I'm assuming it's just as bad or worse in NH. I'm so cold it's not funny. There is actually ice forming in the water in my basement. I'm sick over that... just totally sick over it.

The outside temps have dropped from 35 to 28 and its just getting colder and colder. I'm hoping things get fixed soon!

We've done this before and it worked. Take heavy blankets and put them over and around your freezer. It will hwlp to insulate the freezer and keep the cold air inside.

Good luck,

Just hiked up the heat and I'm logged in on my laptop now. I'm so cold I can hardly type. I have the heat on and the oven on... The pump is on but that poor thing will be on constantly for days now. I don't even want to go downstairs. I think I probably lost a bunch of Christmas ornaments (I had taken some off the steel shelves last weekend to bring upstairs - never anticipating this) and other stuff, but it will be days before I can go down there and do anything about it. Just too much. Way too much water right now. Hopefully hiking the heat will help that situation a little because the basement is vented for heat. 17|3|Robin~*~|RebekkaVA|queen_vulture@msn.com|14:55:13|12/12/2008|

We have had power and heat (love heat!) for a few hours now. DH shop vacced the basement so that's on the mend sort of. He told me not to go down there cuz I'm going to be very upset.

So, I'm just enjoying the lights and heat. Did some decorating for Christmas today but it's actually difficult to do that when you can't turn the tree lights on!!!

We were watching TV and I said to my DH "Hmmm, I haven't heard the pump come on in a while, have you?" So he went downstairs. We actually have a 2-pump system and the newer submerged one comes on but doesn't suck up the water. The second pump doesn't go on because the sensor thing is stuck. OMG. He's downstairs vaccuming up water again and we just called the plumber who should be here in about an hour. God only knows what this is going to cost.

I just turned up the heat, but I don't feel it or hear it coming up either.

I just want to walk out the door, lock it behind me and never look back.

With all this water in the basement hte house is mega cold.

The water is coming in so fast that if we don't have a pump, we'll have to use the shop vac every 10 minutes at a minimum which will mean no sleep for us tonight. We've been up since 5 dealing with the storm today.

I always watch the news about bad weather around and I always think... wow, how do these people deal with downed trees, water, rain, no power, etc. etc. and you always think it will never happen to you. Well.... it did. I lost some food, but not a lot. I'm not too too upset about that.

This plumber seems so rude to me. When he came in my DH told him what was happening and he said "so you have water in your basement - I have water in my basement - everyone has water in their basement - why do you think you are different." I was pissed (as would anyone if you were paying what we are paying for this man to be here. So I said "yeah, that's all well and good, but your company put 2 (not 1, but 2) sump pumps in my basement a mere year ago so I actually don't expect to have water in my basement so that indeed does make me different."

Yikes. I guess the guy is just exhausted. He's probably been dealing with water issues all day himself.
28|4|Geez, that was rude of him to say that....he can think it all he likes, but he doesnt have to say it out loud. How are things this morning? Did he get it fixed?|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|07:13:01|12/13/2008|

OMG !!!!

Been without power for 36 hours now. They are saying possibly up to a week before we get it back. My yard looks like a tornado went through it with all the downed tree branches and limbs.... Never seen anything like it!!! The streets have wires hanging on them, with phone poles that look like mangled match sticks and trees hanging everywhere. No heat, hot water(showers!!),or TOILETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sending the men outside to do their business outside ..... but with freezing temperatures it is not pleasant at all!!!!

Will have to toss out everything in refrigerator. Had to wait over an hour in line for gas last night cuz only 3 open in the city closest to me. My whole town of Lunenburg has no Power whatsoever. I work for the Phone company so I am being forced to work mandatory 12 hour days cuz we have over 1000 troubles in our system for Central Massachusetts alone!!! I work 45 miles away from home and had to take MAJOR DETOURS just to get to work today.. many of the roads are impassable even one main one - Route 117!!!! At least I am in a WARM PLACE with WARM FOOD and access to internet - LOL!!!!

My cellar is also flooding. Hubby got a generator, but it ran out of GAS, - UGH!!!! Never ending battle with that.... but worst thing of all is that my poor dear father, who is dying of cancer, is without heat as well and has nowhere to go!!! He also has no warm food to eat and lives on a dead end street that has no access to it .... I am just sick over this!!! Please say a prayer for him

Believe me, I KNOW exactly what you are going through. I lived through Ice Storm 98 here in upstate NY. We were stranded at home in our rural house with no power for 8 days. The gov't declared the entire area a disaster and all the roads were closed to all but emergency vehicles. Luckily we had a wood stove and some wood. We had candles. We survived through the grace of God.

Hang in there!!

wuthout all the things we were used to we had no water, electic or heat for 2 weeks, the temp stayed at 32 degrees for most of the time, when we saw we were losing our water we drained the pipes and put water in everything we could we melted buckets of ice to flush the tolets,I put gargae bags of ice in my freezer and only lost some bread dough,my hubby had bought a older radio that run on batteries we had that to listen to, we had a old heater that run on fuel iol we used in the day there was 1 radio station that managed to stay on and people would call in so much worst then us.the churchs that still had electric opened up for people to stay in,most people just stayed at there houses and used lots of blankets everyone just helped each other out my sister in law who didn't lose her power made us a huge pot of beef and noodles which I then shared with all my neighbors, it looked like a war zone after wards the national guard came in to help clear the trees I hopew we never go thur that again, but if we did I know we could make it Linda 39|2|It's amazing -- we really do have more capacity than we think we do. I have a friend about 15 miles away who just told me his house is at 44 degrees; the National Guard is on his street. No power, no water, nothing. Of course, since it hasn't been warmer than 25 all day, and is now 18 degrees, his pipes are in trouble. Luckily, he moved his family to his FIL's house a few miles away.

The town next to me is still 50% with no power. Lots of my town are without. I think my area gets it back faster than others because we may be on the same circuit as the hospital. The can be extremely dangerous and deadly to utility workers.

Hi,

Today is DAY 10 without Power. Hubby got a generator on Tuesday which helps with few lights in house, minimal HEAT(so that pipes do not freeze)and working toilets....but no hot water for showers - UGH!!! We got dumped with about 10 inches of snow last night which will hamper efforts to the crews in our area and we are expected to get up to another foot of snow tomorrow into Monday ..... So, needless to say, things are still very bad for us. Just does not feel like Christmas at all

I thought sure you would have power by now. My friend in Holden got his on Wednesday and I figured everyone would be back. While it may not seem like a big thing, thank God you have that generator. So many people were unable to get one and suffered a lot of pipe damage. This storm last night and today can't be helping much. I got over a foot, so I'm figuring you must have also. And it's been snowing all day!!!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!
