1|1|Are you retiring? TN is getting a lot of FL transplants because they don't have to pay all the taxes on their retirement|zombietoo|littlejadensmom@juno.com|04:44:57|12/04/2008|

and the insurance in FL is ridiculous. If you're retiring and moving here from another state like FL it's great, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. There are no jobs and the people that have jobs, they are low paying. The cost of living is low, but so are the wages. Do you like the city or country? I would almost recommend the Great Smokey Mountains, just beautiful, but so polluted with traffic because of all the comercialism. I think Greene Co. has the most beautiful country and mountains if you like the country and the crime rate is low and you're still fairly close to things. Johnson County in my opinion is real pretty too, but you are farther away from things. Bigger cities like Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol have higher crime rates, probably in that order. Part of The Tri-Cities Metropolis (Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol) Johnson City and Kingsport are number one in the country for allergies. The pollen, ragweed and humidity are aweful. The humidity is comparable to FL. There are advantages and disadvantages of course. There is no state income tax, but they get you other ways; sales tax is anywhere from 9.5-9.75% depending on which county you live in, even on food. TVA just had a 20% rate increase, so JCPB increased their rates by 10%! They are eating up the other 10%, but 10% on your power bill is a lot! Some counties have wheel tax. For example when you renew your vehicle registration renewal for your license tag each year, in addition to the registration renewal (and emissions tests in some counties), some counties have wheel tax. Also, if you have school age children that would be another thing to consider... I could go on.

work is slowing down in this area, and cost of living is very high here. We are thinking of him retiring from this job, and getting another job doing something else. Would like to go to an are were housing is more reasonable. We always vacation in Tenn, hoping to go to Chatanooga this winter, and are talking about checking out some areas.

2|1|my inlaws live there and we visit several times a year so here is my opinion..(M)|kthy26|kthy26@yahoo.com|05:38:59|12/04/2008|

My in laws live in a small town called Limestone and its not to far from Greenville or Johnson City or Jonesborough and they really like it there and Limestone is more of country then city but they are very close to Johnson City and the other bigger cities in that area. We like going there for visits but to move there and have to get a job i'm like the other poster they dont pay much the housing is very reasonable there from what i'm use to seeing in northern va. I think if your looking to retire there its ok because thats what my in laws did.

The biggy for us when we go there is the sales tax we are use to a 5% sales tax and down there its like 10% but they dont pay state tax and I think there real estate tax is pretty reasonable

sorry I dont have more info just wanted to share what we see when we go there.

I live up on the KY/TN state line, but we commute to Cookeville to work... It's right in the center of the state on I40 between Nashville and Knoxville... Takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get to Nashville, an hour and half to get to Knoxville and I think 2 hours to Chattanooga. Cookeville has a great college and has been growing nonstop for the last 20 years.... Email me if you need more info...

Thanks!

4|1|Rent first, as you might not want to stay. We moved to Tenn ten years ago and only stayed for two years. The tornado activity was a major problem. |lv2qpon|jac1965@frontiernet.net|16:02:01|12/04/2008|

We lived in Nashville. We were there when the big one hit but after that we had to keep a bag packed by the bed every night during tornado season. We also got tired of the other type of weather, hot burning sun every day when it wasn't tornado season. If you like an active night life, Nashville has that and many cultural activities. It is always good to rent in any area to make sure you like it first unless the housing market is very strong. I hope this helps. 5|1|native Tennessean here :)|kcgirl|lovemyoscarpug@gmail.com |18:03:34|12/04/2008|

I currently live in Knoxville, but was born & raised in Sparta (White County),which is just south of Cookeville that Jessica mentioned earlier.

I totally agree that Cookeville (Putnam County) is a great place. I got my degree from TTU, the college that she mentioned, and it is a great school. Even though there are some "party places", they don't overrun the town, like I've seen other college towns. There are restaurants galore. And it is growing nicely overall. The cost of living is less there, than in Knoxville. I don't think they have a wheel tax there. There are many state parks that are a relatively short drive from Middle TN.

Knoxville is a pretty nice town also, with almost everything that you would need or want. There is great shopping here, great restaurants, various entertainment venues, sports (home of University of TN), and nice housing. I don't have kids, so I can't really speak to the school systems, but the folks I work with have kids in both private and public schools. We're also a stones throw from the Smoky Mountains and Pigeon Forge. There are WONDERFUL things to do in both of those places as a family or not. There is also an airport in Knoxville that is really easy to get around in, and gets you where you need to go pretty easily. We do have a wheel tax here.

Some of my co-workers live in Maryville (Blount County), which is southeast of Knoxville, and immediately next door to the Smokies. Its a nice community, as well, and I have heard that the quality of school systems there is excellent.

I wouldn't recommend Murfreesboro, because it didn't handle its growth well at all. Its getting bigger weekly, but its hard to get around, the crime rate is going up, and its just not a friendly place anymore. My family used to make road trips down there, since its only about 45 minutes from Sparta, but its just more of a pain than anything.

We don't have a state income tax, but our regular sales tax is rather high.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

Thanks for reading!
