My niece gave birth to her first baby this week 3 months early. Her little baby is just 1 pound 14 ounces. He is in the intensive care neonatal unit and is now 5 days old. He is doing good with very little complications at this point. The doctor's say he has a 90% chance of survival. I am just amazed! If you have a personal story of a preemie to share please do. I am worried sick as I have never had anyone close to me with a premature baby. I have read so many amazing stories on the Internet of babies being born this early and going on with absolutely no complications. If you would be kind enough to share a "positive" story with me I would truly appreciate it and find some comfort.

Please pray for my baby nephew. His name is Cade. 1|1|sending prayers up for your nephew. My niece was a preemie, she was born 28 years ago, and my sister had her in her 6th month of pregnancy..|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|23:28:10|11/29/2008|

She was born only weighing 1 pound 4 oz, and survived it. No after effects and she has a genius Iq level. When she was in kindergarden they wanted to bump her to 2nd grade as she was way advanced than the other kids.

My grandmother was also a preemie, she was born weighing under 4 pounds but survived. When they brought her home, they used a wicker laundry basket as her bed, placed her near the front of the wood stove to keep her nice and warm. She grew up to be a registered nurse and had 2 kids of her own. 2|1|My son was also born 3 months early|babyfundsales|babyfundsales@aol.com|23:49:09|11/29/2008|

My water broke just shy of 28 weeks - By I didnt go into Labor until the night before I hit 30 weeks. I had the Gestational Diabetes , So that Help Dylan gain a few extra ounces(maybe even a whole pound) He was 3 lbs when he was born(they figured he be about 2.5lbs according to the sonogram they did a few days before I delivered) and the Doctors Gave him good odds as well. It was very Scary the first few days with all the Monitiors and Iv , Central Line , etc. Dylan had a Small Bleed in his Brain at 1 week old , it was very small and caused no problems but it very common in Preemies born under 32 weeks Gestation. We had a few more bumps along the way but in the end it all worked out. Dylan came home after 48 days in the NICU and has been doing great since. He has gone from 3 lbs 16 inches to 18 lbs and 27 inches in 6 months(I just added new pictures to his blog). The NICU Doctors and Nurses are Amazing , they helped make it alot less scary.

Also the hospital where my son was born had weekly lunch meeting for the parents and families with Babies in the NICU and there really nice. Usually Pizza or something like that , and it nice to be able to talk with others going thought the same thing. So she should ask and see if her hospital offers something like that.

Also Having a Preemie can be Expensive , Insurance companies only cover so much on Hospitals , At Shands they have a program Called CMS (Childrens Medical Sevices) and they Help Cover what the insurance does not. Our Insurance only covered 80% and we were able to get Dylan on CMS and Helped cover alot of his bills. Maybe the Hospital where they are at has a simular program , Have her ask - and soon - With CMS the coverage started when you sign up not when the baby was born(but you can talk to them and sometimes they will back date the application - they did for us)

If you or you Niece needs someone to talk to whos been there , Let me know and I am happy to try and Help. I know how scary it can be but its all worth it in the end , when you finally get to take your baby home.

Matthew 1 lb 14 oz
Robert 2 lbs 2 oz
Noah 2 lbs 9 oz

All three are holy terrors now (kind of) and run my house (they are three). I will keep your neice's baby in my thoughts. The NICU is a definite roller coaster ride, but it's so wonderful when the ride is over!

my nephew was born 3 months early and was only 2lbs he was in the nicu for along time and he had alot of little things hookedup to him. he got to come home at 5lbs and he came home with a little heart monitor he was soo tiny you could hold him in one hand almost.

however now he is 9yrs old and is fine you would never no that he was a preemie. he is the biggest kid in his class at school and the only way you can tell he was a preemie is he had a few little scars on his belly where he had things hooked up to him in the hospital.

i'll be praying for your niece and the baby.

for the baby. I've worked daycare for many years and the smallest baby (under 1 pound at birth) will greet me with a running hug every morning. These babies grow fast and might need a little more time but usually by around 18 months are right on track with "normal" birth babies. My only advise is to make sure everyone washes their hands everytime they are around baby. Infections are tough on the little ones! 9|1|I'll be praying for Cade and your niece (((HUGS)))~*~|RebekkaVA|queen_vulture@msn.com|15:26:33|11/30/2008|

Thank you all so much for the prayers. I am very happy to say that my nephew now weighs 2 pounds 12 ounces and is doing very well. He is no longer on the ventilator or CPAP, just straight nasal cannula which is wonderful for a baby this small. He did have a heart procedure to clamp off a heart murmur last week (which went well). Since the procedure he has started feedings which are being increased every day and is getting stronger by the day. He is truly a "miracle." I recently found out that he will be the "poster child" for the March of Dimes walk in 2009 in the community he lives in.

I just wanted to give an update and to says THANKS so much for all the prayers and inquires. It means the world to me. God Bless You!

Please keep Cade in your prayers as he still has a long road in the NICU. 14|1|I will say a prayer for Cade |teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|18:48:44|12/28/2008|
