Ok, a friend, Lets call her Lucy, has been out of work since July. Had a job, but didn't pass background check because of an error. "Lucy" worked on getting the error fixed, and finally did have it taken off the record as of November. In the meantime, this job waited and waited patiently. Since the job is in the retail field, doing inventories, the 1st week of November, other employees were working in other aspects of the store, and the manager wanted "Lucy" to wait until the new year. Well, "Lucy" finally got a start date of January 5th. Yeah, she is counting down the days. Then yesterday, "Lucy" got a letter from her local county saying that she has been summoned for jury duty from January 6th until January 30th. She was also summoned last May, but due to a planned family vacation, was able to get it postponed, but you can only do that once. This summons was sent regular mail. Does she.....
#1- pretend she didn't get the letter (she is leaning towards this)
#2 - tell new employer, as they can't fire her, she just doesn't think it looks very good
#3 - call county and explain situation and BEG for another extension or offer to serve in December
#4 - crawl in bed and go back to sleep??????? LOL

What could be the possible ramifications for ignoring the letter?

Thanks in advance for opinions. 1|1|I would opt for #3 since there is possibility of imprisonment for ignoring the letter......|KELLYNEISH|KELLYNEISH@AOL.COM|10:37:12|11/29/2008|

She has the letter to show as proof if necessary for #2 but it wouldn't hurt to give #3 a shot either. Just because she got that letter doesn't mean she'll be called to serve or even have to go in that 1st day. If the defendant accepts a plea bargain or something, the case could be settled by Jan. 6th so any specific dates noted in the letter could be cancelled, altho she would still be on call for that whole month should another trial come up. You do NOT ever want to ignore one of those letters as it's a sure bet for being held in contempt of court. It may seem frightening & not be something most of us want to do but it's actually an honor & a privilege to be called to serve jury duty as it shows they've checked you out & found you to be a good, law-abiding citizen, & it's a way to give something back to the community in which you live.

Thanks so far for all the feedback....
"Lucy" does want to serve on Jury duty, but the timing is so off. She really wants to make a great impression with this job. She really needs this job, as her dh has been the only one bringing in money, and really starting to rub it in her face. When we go grocery shopping, she is given a strict budget to abide by, and with a larger family, it is really difficult.
Need more opinions, she is not looking for the one to tell her to ignore it to make her decision, and really wants to do what is best for her family. 5|3|Have her ask the employer what they want her to do|vickijo|vjdesmond@rochester.rr.com|17:15:33|11/29/2008|

I was in a similar situation. I asked the employer and they offered to give me a letter saying they really needed me and asking if they would consider postponing the Jury Duty one more time. I tried to postpone it myself again and explained everything to the best of my ability and they granted me the postponement again. The funny part is when I finally got another jury duty letter I called like they tell you to the night before and it told me I wasn't even needed. I was good for another 3 years even without acutally serving. I would tell her to just be honest and try to postpone it again.

Thanks!

just regular jury duty a normal jury duty summons is for a week and you usually know in the first couple of days if you will serve.

I am looking for offers in concealed cash ayor ppef or make an offer in????

I mail all my trades from the post office and get a receipt.

you always hear noises in the dark when you work at night 7|2|I was thinking the same thing.....unless she has to call each week of that time period and may only be called in once. Also, it might be Federal court....when I got called for Fed court, the eligibility period was about 3 weeks, but I only actually got summoned for one week (wasnt chosen anyway, so I only had to show up for one day of jury selection).|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:11:10|11/29/2008|

One was a federal case and I was actually disappointed that I couldn't do it. Twice now, I have been summoned for jury duty shortly after giving birth (that was a weird coincidence) and I was able to let them know that I was the primary caregiver for an infant, was nursing and it would be a financial hardship and got out of it easily.

On one of mine there was a local email I wrote to, and I heard back within the same day that I was excused.

Now, I just wait and hope that I will get called again someday because I think it would be an interesting experience and is something I would like to do just once.

I would choose #3. I have found the courts I dealt with to be pretty compassionate and willing to work with you. I think it helped that I also told them that I really did wish I could serve but it was impossible at that time.
Hope it all works out. 11|6|GREAT NEWS INSIDE|lablover77|lablover77@comcast.net|13:40:53|12/01/2008|

Lucy spoke with her boss-to-be and explained everything to her. She asked her for a letter stating when she was scheduled to start and her boss said no problem. She called the courts today, explained everything to them. They granted her an extension until May. She also called her boss-to-be and she said that would be no problem. Thanks for all the advice! She was really leaning towards ignoring the letter, thanks to all the comments, she changed her mind. Thanks again.
