Got the poke test and they found I am allergic to grass, trees and weeds. The Dr put me on nasal spray and Zyrtec and wants to do a CAT scan on my sinuses since he suspects problems with them (sniffer is defective and have had bad sinus headaches for years).

Now for the surprise-I have food allergies! I did not even think of that. I am very allergic to corn and wheat and mildly to sesame and tomatoes. Sooo, he's thinking thats the main reason for all the rashes and itchy skin. I will go back in 2 weeks for a patch test to check for chemicals but for now he's thinking its food allergies.

Anyone dealing with allergies to corn and wheat? Those are in practically everything. Do I give up eating?? LOL

2|1|OOH, before you give up wheat, you should ask the allergy doc to draw blood and test for celiac. If you give up wheat b/4 test, the antibodies might not show. You can test neg and just be allergic to wheat, but it is something to consider since celiac is linked to colon cancer in some people. I had it done and it was neg. Definitive test is the tummy scope, but the blood test if pos would lead them to do that test. |Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|22:28:30|11/19/2008|

But be careful, just because it says no wheat doesn't mean that it is ok. Some companies make no wheat products with spelt which is related to wheat and you might also be allergic to it.

Gluten free products can be very expensive! I just got back from the health food store - the pretzels I bought were $7 for a pound! I bought them for a treat.

But I am so glad they exist. If you make your own it is cheaper - there are some good cookbooks out there called the Gluten Free Gourmet - they tell you how to make bread and how to substitute other ingredients for regular flour.

5|1|TYVM...I went to the library today and found 2 cookbooks|hudge4|hudge95@yahoo.com|23:15:29|11/20/2008|

It's going to be a lot of trial and error to see what affects me and what I can get away with. To start off with I am giving up the things with high amounts of high fructose corn syrup/corn (like pancake syrup, soda, prepared foods) and wheat (like cereal and breads) and almost everything processed.

I didn't have time to get to the grocery store today and not enough time to figure out what I could have so I just stared into the pantry & fridge. It was pretty slim anyway and even more slim when everything has corn or wheat in it. Ended up eating what I shouldn't and am itching pretty bad right now! Took an allergy pill and will just go to bed.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Appreciate it...

That is a GF list. Also, many restaurants will tell you which items are GF. I ate at a Chilis and they brought me a copy of their GF list once - that was really nice.

BTW, McD fries have wheat in them - but Burger King doesn't. Of course, I don't know what kind of oil they are frying them in. But many restaurants will give you lunch w/out the buns - they just punch it in their computer as low-carb. Other than a salad, the only thing I can eat at MCD is their grilled chicken.

I have celiac disease so almost everything is a no-no for me :(
To add insult to injury I'm also lactose intolerant.

As someone has already mentioned gluten free products are really expensive. BUT if you want to eat out I know that Boston Market has a gluten free menu & so does Red Robin. Whole Foods are my life-saver, expensive, but they have all kinds of breads, Pastas, cereals, crackers etc. & cooked foods, like my favorites apple pie & cherry pie. King Soopers sells products by Udi which are gluten free & their bread is to die for, like 'normal bread' but $5.49 a loaf.

Do a search online for the things you need to avoid due to allergies etc. Via Google I found lots of sites with gluten free products, recipes & tips etc.

I found wheat free waffles, pure maple syrup, corn syrup/wheat free turkey gravy, salad dressings, and condiments. I even found an organic chocolate syrup (no corn syrup)! So, ok, this might not be too bad. The difficult thing is eating out. Where a resturant might have GF menu, what about corn syrup? I guess just stick to hamburger w/o bun until I can figure out what to eat.

Last night I made a turkey and my own cranberry sauce, spinich salad with feta cheese and waluts with natural salad dressing and topped it off with organic ice cream & chocolate sauce. Not a headache/stomach ache or itch to be had! Hooray!

You may want to call them to ask... they are generally pretty good at answering questions as I have had to call about things myself. I submitted several receipts for Lactaid and got them tossed back... seems they thought I was buying to resell. I was like, um, I had coupons and this was way cheaper to buy it this way. So they told me to submit the receipts separately and not all at once to squeak em' by. |Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|19:58:11|11/22/2008|
