I heard a really interesting story last night about how Dogs for the Deaf are training some dogs for autistic kids. It seems to be a fairly new idea, but I think an excellent one.

Recently there was a little autistic boy who lives in a nearby town who was going to school (I think K or 1st grade, he is a little guy) who managed to get away from the class and almost drowned in a drainage ditch nearby. He is recovering now (barely survived, but thankfully it seems he will mostly be okay), so when I heard the dog story I just thought, "yes!"

I like that Dogs for the Deaf uses a lot of rescued dogs from shelters.

Anyway I know we have parents of autistic kids on here (and grandmas) and I know we have dog people. Maybe someone will be inspired to train a dog, donate to dogs for the deaf or just learn more about that part of what they are doing. My brother and his family trained a few dogs a couple years ago and it was time consuming, but they loved every minute of it. Someday when I have a "house" rather than an apartment, I would like to do that too. I think it would be fun and would feel really rewarding. For now though, our family cats are finally enjoying getting their space back since all of our foster kittens are all re homed. No way would they tolerate a dog... LOL!

I would love to get a place with a big yard and train some of them. That would be so awesome and such a rewarding experience. Hugs, Rebekka

P.S. I'm glad that little boy is recovering
