my SIL , hubby and 3 little kids (ages 2 to 8) are coming for a "vacation" week starting Sunday. We don't celebrate the holidays and haven't had anyone "Stay" that long ever... Need ideas to entertain them... "Town/Walmart, etc" is 25+ miles away and don't really care to cart around a bunch of little ones.

I'll probably have to work a few days, but was thinking of things like bake cookies, make homemade candy...
"pizza party"..individual size pizzas they can top themselves... We have board games, movies, and video games but
Can only stand so much of that.

My kids are 8, 13, 15, and 17--so BIG age difference there
Any helpful hints??

You could make playdough and they could shape it into things and you could let it dry or bake it in the oven to speed up the process.

Have a taco night. Everyone builds their own taco.

Thanks!

My 2 and 8 year old really love to work together with crafts so I bought things like google eyes (I know, they are small but she is almost 3 and well supervised), pom poms, pipe cleaners, felt, etc. I keep it in a box and let them play and it keeps them busy!

They also love to play hot potato with a real potato (but cold, not cooked of course, I am not that crazy!)

Bubbles, sidewalk chalk on nice days.

HTH. I bet they will enjoy being in a new place and may not need a lot of entertaining. 4|1|Get a couple decks of cards. Have a taffy pull, Do some crafts projects, like make your own ornaments. It will be something to remember the visit by.|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|20:55:38|11/16/2008|

When my kids were younger, they loved to string the popcorn to put on the tree. Always took us a few days to get it long enough or we would make sevearal smaller strings.

I've had family/friends stay with me long and short term...just went about my daily routine and told my vistors to feel at home. For kids I just let them play in my sons room with toys, do some coloring, reading books, playing with playdoh, watching movies and going to the park..Just fun things. When my dad was here we would go out for lunch or dinner..in the evening we would sit and he would tell me stories, of his life before me or after me, I found it all really interesting a learned new things about my dad I never knew, and it was great connect that way with my dad, we just talked..

I don't know what state you live in, but depending on the weather, a day at the zoo would be great, a outing at a indoor/outdoor pool, take in some museums, or any place local in your town or city that your family has enjoyed...I'm sure they will love them to. A chance to see your hometown.

** Most attractions have a free day, or maybe you can get coupons for a reduced fare. And you can pack lunches, snacks and drinks to take with on outings to make it even cheaper. 13|8|I know what you mean. You need to have some planned activities so they don't get bored. I would stock the house with snacks, bring out the games, puzzles, rent a few movies, have ingredients for cookies, meals handy. Maybe SIL could prepare cookies or fix dinner with a few of the kids. Boys like computer/video games. Rent some from the library (computer games) or see if you could borrow a game system from someone if you don't have one.

Another idea is to have a group game you could play in the evenings, like pictionary or Bible trivia/charades. Kids always LOVE those and its good for a variety of ages.

What's nice to do for the adults is have a few of their favorite magazines or ones you think they would like, placed in a basket in their bedroom along with sample size items to try, lotion, and maybe some gum or hard candy.

I used to have a friend that would have a "space bag" pre-filled with sheets, towels, blanket and pillow for guests. She'd hand them one of those and a basket as above and they were set!

Have fun with your guests!
