22 0|0|HELP! Birthday Party Disaster?|jsevier|asevier@twlakes.net|10:15:01|11/15/2008|
Posted on Nov-15-08 at 10:15 AM (Eastern) by 206.74.57.20

Hallie's 8th birthday party is this afternoon at 2'o clock- we will be leaving in 4 hours- it's at the skating rink... She's throwing up this morning!! I just gave her some phenergan, if it doesn't work and she doesn't feel better by the time we need to leave, what do I do? There's like 22 kids coming, do I meet them at the door and trade a cupcake for a gift? Right now she feels so bad, she doesn't want to go. The next 6 weekends are filled up with holiday parties and such and there isn't time to reschedule!

Thanks!
Jessica

At the same time, I already have this block of time reserved, I have to pay the $50 for it, and I have already spent $20 on the cupcakes. Due to the holidays coming up, we can't reschedule.

have the party without her....since you have already paid for it.....and since you don't want other kids to come down with what she has. Take lots of pics to show her....or if you have a video camera, let the kids record a message for her.

In a week or 2 when she's beetter...maybe you could have a little get together with one or two close friends.

I don't think anyone should be upset that she's not there.......kids get sick all the time. Personally, I would be more upset if my kid went to a party and was intentionally exposed to something.

Just my thoughts.

Her birthday isn't until the 26th- but with it being so close to Thanksgiving and then Christmas activities starting, we always have a really low turnout... so this year I planned it 2 weeks earlier and let her invite 26 kids, and she thinks 22 are coming- I was figuring maybe only 12 or so would be able to come, lol. Last year she invited 15 and only 7 showed. We decided to do cupcakes instead of a cake this year and I got 3 dozen, the cashier laughed and said she could never get them home in one piece, and I thought, "huh? what's so hard about getting cupcakes home?" - LOL, as I was moving the cart around to the side of the truck to put them in the floor board where they would be "safe", the top 2 dozen flipped over upside down. LOL. They weren't too disastrous, just a little messy. Well, we are down to an hour and half from leaving, Hallie says she is feeling muuuucccchhhh better. She hasn't run a fever at all, so maybe it's just a little stomach bug that is passing on by. She just drank a little water, if it stays down, We'll see....

Thanks!
Jessica

that some of the kids (or their moms) would insist you take their birthday presents home for Hallie so that she's not totally disappointed. At least that's what I would do if I was one of those children's moms.

good luck with it!

After discovering that if she didn't eat or drink anything, she was perfectly OK, she really wanted to go. SO- out of the 26 that were invited, only 3 showed up, plus two siblings. What a bust. We have ALOT of cupcakes to eat, LOL. The 3 that came all brought cards with $10 each which was very very appreciated, but she was dissapointed that she didn't have any actual presents to open. Good thing we still have 2 family parties to go, LOL. On the way home she said that everyone else must have gone to another girls party who was having a "BIGGER" Hannah Montana party. Oh well. Can't please 'em all. Needless to say, I think this was the last "party" year for her, next year hopefully I can talk DH into letting her have 2 friends sleepover - hopefully she has two that are willing to stay way out in the boon docks, LOL. I just hate that I spent $70 on the skating rink and cupcakes for 3 friends- I could have spent that on a better gift than what we're able to afford now.

Thanks!
Jessica

OUt of 12 kids in my son's 4 year old class only 1 bothered to respons and no one came... people can be incredibly insensitive and kids are just self focused as we all know- it's the state of being a kid. The sad thing is most parents aren't teaching their kids any better, not teaching them to care about other people, or be nice, or make an effort. Most people just seem to go for the biggest bang, imho. Too bad too, imagine how shallow that is. 14|8|the skating rink here is 90.00 for rental |lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|23:37:01|11/15/2008|

LOL- nobody RSVP'd, but all the kids had told Hallie they would be coming, so that's why I was expecting a good turnout.

Thanks!

I'm worried of this exact same thing happening for my son. He has ADHD, and just last week, he told me that the other kids think that he's "annoying"....but he really wants a birthday party this year. I hope at least a few show up for him...gonna definitely do the RSVP so that I kind of know what to expect.

This is probably what I will do for Thomas's party next year.... Either A) put "Please kindly RSVP for planning purposes" or put an extra sheet of paper in the invitation sort of like they do for wedding invitations with a "yes I can come" or "sorry, no I can't come".

Thanks!

It is standard here locally to call if you have not heard either way if someone is coming to the party. I do not consider it an RSVP unless I talk to a parent, as kids often say they are coming even w/out consulting their parents. For anyone I have not talked to personally, I use the excuse of needing to know how much cake/ pizza is needed OR that the business needs a final count.

I think most parents have experienced this or have a fear it could happen, so I think just touching base w/ them keeps everything going as expected. Plus everyone wants to feel special, and if someone thinks their child's presence is super important to the birthday boy/girl, I think they make a special effort to include their child.

Anyhow, that is my 2c.

Sorry your daughter's bday got started poorly w/ her flu and that it did not turn out as she expected. However, 3 friends, if good friends, are more than most can say they have. And to get $30 cash to spend as she wishes is wayyyyyyyyy better than $30 in gifts she does not like. I think it would be fun for your daughter to invite each of the three over individually to play with the toys she purchased w/ her money. 20|5|I agree w/ aloha--you have to call|sheliar|sandk95@embarqmail.com|11:39:14|11/16/2008|

If kids are given the invitation, then they may not even make it home! They could stay in the backpack forgotten, etc, and it's standard practice here to call each parent if they've not RSVP'd. Kids ALWAYS say they're coming, but most times they have not talked to their parents, so it's not a reliable count unless you talk to the parents. I'd also not feel bad about her not having any gifts to open--at least with the money she can get something SHE wants (that could be a $30 item) instead of 3 $10 items she may not have wanted anyway.
Keep that in mind in for future parties.
Shelia
