We moved down 3 1/2 years ago from Long Island, NY, it is a totally different world, up until recently I would have gone back to NY in a heartbeat if we could have afforded it but only because I was used to it and I liked being near the city and all the action, my husband who everyone thought would never leave NY gets upset at me for even thinking of ever moving back, he took to FL like a duck to water, now that I have made friends and the kids are getting set in school I am fine with the heat and as far as bugs they do have a lot of funky things but I can deal since they mostly stay out of the house, there are rip off artists but that is because of the huge retired population and some call it a transient state, I dont evenk now what it means, I guess people come and go for work, etc, it may be true but where we live I dont see anything like that, I finally started a garden that I can keep year round which I love and I have a/c on in November right now, the stores do not double which stinks but if you are bargain hunters like us you can still find good deals. As far as housing, we bought in a regular neighboorhood an older house not in one of the fancy develepments everyone ran for and I am much happier, I can not live with deed restrictions and neighbors who have their noses in the air (my brother lives in one of those places right on the 10th hole tee of the golf course, he literally has balls hit in his kitchen window while eating b'kfast and right now there are tons of homes in his development in foreclosure since they bought them at astronomical prices and now the value is worth not even half and these people can not give them away), we are outside Tampa (about 45 minutes) and in our area there are tons of foreclosures also, a lot of older people lived here and they could not keep up with insurance and tax increases but the insurance prices have leveled off now and hopefully will stay lower and as far as taxes I doubt house values will ever skyrocket like they did which means taxes will not skyrocket again like they did, but as far my neighboorhood, I pay attention to real estate and in the past year and half I have seen 8 houses sell within a 4 block radius of my house, they were all short sale/foreclosures and you could buy them at around 80 to 90,000 (and they are decent house 11-1200 SF, two bathrooms, some two car garages but all have at least one, most only have 2 bedrooms though and not a huge yard but you have enough room to move, we have a garden, swingset and still plenty room for kids and a dog) and every house that has sold I have seen people doing work to, so to me I see it as a positive sign that people are coming down to reality and buying what they can afford and if they put enough work into the house they will want to stay and in turn fixing them up will help house values and bring in people who really want to be here and make it a better community. Schools are not the best in my opinion but I think parents can make a big difference in that aspect to make up for any deficiencies but the problems are no different than anywhere else, no money for funds, not enough teachers, etc but overall I would not say it is a crisis, I am prefectly fine with the education my son gets. As far as work I dont know, we made suire my husband had a job lined up before we moved down here and we were extremely lucky that he got a job at the air force base with the gov't., next year I plan to look for something but I am fine working in a grocery store or somewhere like that and there are jobs for that around here, cost wise, everyone said how cheap it is, it is not, rent wise it was a ton cheaper for us, before we bought the house (which like I said you can get dirt cheap now) we paid 750 for an apartment with pool, it included a wahser/dryer, water, cable and garbage, it was 1100 sf, in NY we lived in a 950 sf apartment, paid 1300$ in rent and it only included water. in some areas I know it is really expensive to live but by us it is not expensive as far as rents go, groceries are no different than anywhere else, same with electric, gas, etc.. and as far as wages, at least for where we live I dont see any diffewrences in wages that I would see anywhere else, that was another thing I heard how wages are not as high here but it is cheaper to live, then someone said it costs the same to live but wages are lower and you will be screwed, I guess everyone has a different experience, for us it seems like wages/cost of living are the same as everywhere else, except for rent, I find it to be WAY cheaper than where we moved from.

I think Florida gets a bad rap and it not really as bad as people think. Before I moved here from Long Island Ny I thought Florida was nothing but old age homes and Golf Corses. And I never thought that I would leave Ny. My Parent moved to Florida in 1995 and they tried to talk me into moving and I would tell them I will never Leave NY. Well a Year later as an Engagement gift my parents Sent Dan and I Plane tickets to come and visit them. Well After a week I didnt want to leave. Both Dan and I loved Florida and Decided to move up the Wedding and Move to Florida.

Yes Florida Can get Very Hot and Humid in the Summer and there are some Strange bugs.

The Area were in is very Diverse(I think that The right word) Where we live in like a Normal Suburbon area , Nice houses , lots of Neighbors , Kids , Etc.

When my Parents are is Horse Country - and they live 15 minutes North of Us. Out by them is Huge 100 & 1000 Acre Farms , and small 10 plus area farms. Lots of Horses and cattle.

Even My In laws move done after a visit. They Live about 30 minutes south of Us , Out by the Ocala National Forest - that area is house on 3 , 5 , 10 plus acre lots , Dirt roads. Some folks out there look like there might of been a little bit of Cousin marring cousin.

There are also many areas that are on Golf Corses , and Adult (55 plus) comunities. And if you go down by Disney it more expensive , Younger crowd , lots of Traffic and Turist all year round.

Florida offers a wide variety , Like anywhere else there are good neighborhood and bad.

I will admit it did take me a year before I felt like this was home. I was Missing NY and my friends alot during that first year. Now most of them live here too.

As far as Bargin Hunting - Ocala and the Surronding areas have some great thrift shops , Antique Shops and 2 large Flea Markets. PLus lot of Yard sales almost all year round.

Sadly I dont know of any stores that double coupons(well Kmart but that just started)

I think Florida is a Great place to live. We have a large 3 bed , 2 bath home with attached Garage. My Morgage , Insurance and Taxes run about $800 Month , Water runs about $18 amonth , Gargae about $45 every 3 months , Electic has been very high lately almost $300 but that varies by area.

We have been here 11 years now and still love it. Hubby and I are both in are mid 30's now and have no plans of moving any time soon. I cant say about the schools yet(Dylan is only 5 months) but I am sure like most places there are good and bad.

Hope this helps.

We are in, I think they call it West Central, outside Tampa and it is not bad here and I know Ocala is in our area sort of, which someone mentioned so it is similar to us but South Florida, from what I have seen and heard it is crummy. Everyone we know who moved down here moved to West plam Beach, Naples or those areas into the big expensive gated communities, cost is high and there is no balance, either poor or gated communties (who alot of are poor due to the real estate market but luckily live in a nice area), I don't think I would ever have adjusted to S. Florida. Here it is such a mix, there are the gated communities but you stil have so many of the older neighboorhoods like we live in that were created for the retirees that people have no choice but to find a balance. Expense wise I think S.Florida is much more expensive rent wise and housing cost wise also.

hardly anyone spoke english, every other person seemed to be a rip off artist, it was SUPER expensive and almost all the communities were gated and expensive... the funny thing is most people were still poor though it was never dangerous like Miami, OMG,

We went to Orlando frequently for weekends at disney, universal and seaworld, and to tampa to visit distant family. We found Naples just as we were leaving and it is a beautiful beach place, and my favorite is Sarasota and the gulf... also the keys before the tourists arrive lol 24|3|Glennie: nice to hear it isn't ALL bad!|missy|lovetotrade@hotmail.com|11:54:12|11/16/2008|

I did not know your price range was under 100k. That limits things a bit but there are lots of foreclosures and short sales in the area. Check out the Daytona Beach craigslist real estate. You can type palm coast and get an idea of prices. Here are a couple I found:

3 bedroom 2 bath for 99K
http://daytona.craigslist.org/reb/917426721.html

Bank owned 3 bedroom 2 bath for 95K
http://daytona.craigslist.org/reb/917409031.html

Your best bet is to locate an area you are interested in and then contact some realtors in the area. They can help you find what you are looking for in your price range. I don't know if you have children but if you do be sure to do your research on schools.HTH 29|2|Thanks!! I've never seen Craigs List. I was recommending Palm Coast which is closer to Ormond Beach than it is to Daytona Beach. I was stating that if you check the Daytona Beach craigslist it has listings for Palm Coast. Palm coast does not have it's own craigslist. The two closest are either St. Augustine or Daytona Beach. Quite a few ads for Palm Coast and Ormond Beach show up on craigslist. To access craigslist type www.craigslist.org Then find the state that you are looking for. Once you click on the state it will break it down into citys. At the top of the page of Daytona Beach it lists housing. Click on real estate for sale. It will take you to a master list. You can then narrow your search by city such as Palm Coast or Ormond Beach. If you need any further assistance please let me know. HTH

I live in Texas now,but lived in north central Florida for 17 years. Great weather there - never have extreme temps.

Check out the medium size towns in this area - Lake City,Live Oak,Alachua - even Gainesville which is a college town. Housing is cheaper than it is on the coast or further south.

My son is living in Gainesville working on his PHD at the University of Florida. I am helping him (online) look for a condo to buy and am finding them in his price range which is around 100K.
