Except for the iffy batch of the HP 3820 Inkjet printers (which HP acknowledged had bad printheads), I've always been really happy & had great experience w/HP printers & scanners. The ink is a little pricey on some of them but it lasts a very long time. HTH. ;)

I highly recommend HP as well. I've had my HP B&W laser for almost 10 years and it's been the best thing ever!
I buy one toner cartridge every 12-18 months. The high capacity cartridge for it is about $75 and I always manage to find a coupon and/or wait till they offer a freebie with purchase.
I've been seriously thinking about a laser color + all-in-one and at Christmas when my parents ask me what I want I might tell them a new printer. I will get an HP then too...got my eye on one at Staples.
Staples has the HP LaserJet P1006 Printer B&W for $99.98 right now after $80 instant coupon (check their website). This is a nice little B&W laser. The place I used to work I had one on my desk I used for check printing, they also had larger HP color printers we used for everything else.
Parents have an HP all-in-one (ink jet)...it's an ink hog but still a very nice printer, especially for photo printing, IMO.
You are wise for choosing toner vs. ink jet if printing in B&W doesn't bother you, it never has me and I'll still keep & use my B&W even if I do get a new one with color. I'll just now have a choice of how I want to print and I'll be able to replace my 1/2 broken scanner and crappy & expensive to maintain fax machine in the process.

i have an all-in-one and it only cost $129.00,i ordered it online
at Staples and they also had a rebate for $65,so $64 for a printer
is not a bad deal to me,they also had free shipping at the time,
can't beat that and i went thru a rewards program

I have used HP and they are good The best printer I have used is a Brother I have used canon also people are always giving them away on freecycle. I say evaluate what he will use this for over the next year as part of your research before buying.
