2|1|Could be sick or have you brought something new in the house?!.|bluh2oeyes|bluh2oeyes@yahoo.com|16:48:26|11/09/2008|

I would agree about taking to the vet for a check-up cause if they have never done it before and you haven't introduced anything or anyone new to the house then they are usually sick. If you have introduced a new person, baby, pet, large item, etc. to the house or moved something then they may just be angry and this is their way of telling you how they aren't happy with that.

Or if you switched litter, used a different cleaner on the box, etc. that too could be the problem.

5|1|I agree, but you have to get rid of the odor where she pee or she will go there again|ladywcats|neal2856@sbcglobal.net|10:59:43|11/10/2008|

chances are she has an infection and thinks the box is the problem. Get her to the vet and clorox her box and bedding. lysol is not good for cat it can make them sick. Also watch to make sure she is peeing because if she is just squatting that could mean blocked and you must get kitty to vet right away.

#1 -- Kitty probably smells grandma and it's a smell she can't connect and feels uncomfortable about it. Kitties do NOT do change well - and change can mean something new such as grandma's items.

#2 -- I second Jackie's statement -- think hard and long about the declawing. I had a cat that was declawed by mistake once (he was little and black the vet was supposed to do big and orange... duh!). It is VERY painful. It is the equivalent of taking off your first knuckle. I don't care how badly your kitty is scratching up things -- she doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. Training would be better. Or claw caps. If that's impossible I would even opt for finding her a new home. It's just a sad sad thing to do.

7|2|Don't they put the cats to sleep while doing the declawing?|Mightymom7492|Mightymom74@hotmail.com|13:40:36|11/10/2008|

My cat is now 10 years old and when I got her declawed she seemed fine. My daughter got another kitten as a gift (against my no's) and I was going to declaw her this week. I tried the caps with my older cat when she was little and all they did was fall off her or she bit them off. My son got scatched so bad that is why I declawed her. She is fine now. Just my opinion. Don't mean to step on anyone toes here :) 8|3|read an excerpt from declawing.com inside:|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|14:07:16|11/10/2008|

"Before you make the decision to declaw your cat, there are some important facts you should know. Declawing is not like a manicure. It is serious surgery. Your cat's claw is not a toenail. It is actually closely adhered to the bone. So closely adhered that to remove the claw, the last bone of your the cat's claw has to be removed. Declawing is actually an amputation of the last joint of your cat's "toes". When you envision that, it becomes clear why declawing is not a humane act. It is a painful surgery, with a painful recovery period. And remember that during the time of recuperation from the surgery your cat would still have to use its feet to walk, jump, and scratch in its litter box regardless of the pain it is experiencing. Wheelchairs and bedpans are not an option for a cat. "

I know this is never a popular decision but I do have my cats declawed. To answer your question-yes, they are put to sleep during the procedure. But, when they wake up, is when they feel the pain. My vet only declaws if you agree to pay the extra dollars for a pain patch which the kitty wears for the next few days. I have had 7 declawed cats during my lifetime and I do get this patch for them. I have found the younger the cat is the easier it is on them. Makes good sense as they weigh less and thus there is less weight when they try to walk. But, even a 2 year old cat did just fine. As far as everyone saying these cats have more problems later, I have never had a problem with even 1 of them. They have all been very content and happy cats even after declawing. There was never any biting etc. My cats are very spoiled and this is the only way that I will have them in my home so they do not destroy furniture, draperies, rugs, each other etc. I can't afford to replace everything that they would ruin but they are totally loved and happy. So, while I do understand the reasons why this is frowned upon, I feel for me it is the only option if I want to keep cats. Also after declawing, never let these cats outdoors as you are removing their ability to defend themselves. I know that when we get a cat, it will be with us forever and I do have a plan for them if something should happen to us. Their futures are planned so being without claws will not be a problem for them. My cats are treated as family members and I do not feel that declawing causes permanent harm to them. We pamper them during the recuperation time and then they are fine to run and jump again. Just my opinion, of course! 11|1|We have ours declawed too--2 kitties here|sheliar|sandk95@embarqmail.com|15:38:12|11/10/2008|

It was the only way we could stop them from clawing up our furniture. We tried everything--sprays, sticky tape on furniture, claw caps, scratching posts, etc. and nothing worked. We had both declawed, and they were fine. Before we could do that, though, the couch and loveseat are scratched beyond repair and we now have slipcovers.

Do what is best for you on the declawing. Remember, any "elective" surgery is often thought inhumane--declawing in cats, ear and tail docks in dogs, and circumcisions in baby boys. Final decision is always yours regardless of what others say.

Good luck!
Shelia

I guess I will hold off declawing kitty. I didn't know it was that expensive to declaw kittens. Can't afford it now. Thanks for the information. 13|3|my mom had 2 cats declawed when they were fixed so they were asleep and |lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|18:35:32|11/10/2008|

You have 1 cat so you should have 2 litter boxes....I have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes....I use the great big square aluminum baking pans as litter boxes from the dollar store. I replace them every three months.

When I had 6 cats at one time, one of my cats had a problem and my vet said to get the extra litter box.
