Last time I got a refill, I went to a different pharmacy, and they no longer had the albuterol and had to give me a substitute. That was quite a while ago....so I'm thinking that probably by now the drugstores have completely run out of their stock on hand and replaced it with a different inhaler.

I prefer albuterol over any of the other inhalers for a quick acting solution. One inhaler lasts me a pretty long time, so I was hoping that I could get one more refill of the albuterol somewhere.

People with new inhalers report the problems
that they are experiencing with the new inhalers to our MedWatch
program. This program is a voluntary system of reporting to FDA
problems patients' experience with products we regulate. We view this
reporting system as a source for signaling trends. Should a trend
emerge, the FDA will work with the sponsor of the product to address
the problem."

Called in for a refill a few days ago on the reg. Albuterol but when I picked it up, it was Proventil HFA & it is NOT working for crap. :( The quantity is less than half (6.7g) of the reg. Albuterol (17g) but increasing the number of puffs doesn't even work. Had tried both Proventil & Pro-Air HFAs last year & they're definitely substandard & inefficient in comparison to the reg. Albuterol inhalers. The reg. Albuterol inhaler is much, much more effective at opening the airways & also loosening up any crud in my lungs. These new HFA's are a bunch of b.s. garbage so I thought it was time to let the FDA know just what I thought about them.
Thanks for sharing the link Maisa! :)

works pretty well for me and the older version of this same med DID NOT WORK so I stockpiled the albuterol and got this one just last week.

Call Walgreens, walmart and different cvs. IF they have it on the shelf they will give it to you - I had to do this with the acne meds I have to
take because of the inhalers and I called winn dixie, publix, walmart and found ONE store with it on the shelf and it was the last one and had still
been changed to a weaker wash. These drug companies have so much nerve, if they can dilute a product to make more money they will.

Don't forget to call all your local food stores with pharmacies, they don't get as much use as the bigger chains and will sometimes have what
you need. I found mine at the publix second farthest away from my house. Good luck. 9|1|If you can find any pharmacies that still have the old CFC inhalers, get them while you still can |ennui|april_dancer2000@yahoo.com|16:24:51|10/31/2008|

From the FDA website [ http://www.fda.gov/Cder/drug/podcast/albuterol_inhalers_20080926.htm ]:
"Albuterol inhalers that contain chlorofluorocarbons, also known as CFCs, will not be sold in the U.S. after December 31, 2008. Albuterol inhalers that contain hydrofluoroalkanes, also known as HFAs, will take the place of albuterol CFC inhalers."

"Why are albuterol CFC inhalers being phased out?
The phase out of albuterol CFC inhalers is due to an international agreement called the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. CFCs are harmful to the environment because they decrease the protective ozone layer above the Earth.

When will albuterol CFC inhalers be gone?
Albuterol CFC inhalers will not be sold in the United States after December 31, 2008. The company that makes albuterol CFC inhalers is expected to stop making albuterol CFC inhalers before then. People who are using albuterol CFC inhalers should talk with their health care professional now about switching to an albuterol HFA inhaler. There are enough albuterol HFA inhalers for everyone who needs them.

What albuterol HFA inhalers are available?
There are three albuterol HFA inhalers with the active ingredient albuterol sulfate FDA has approved as safe and effective:

* ProAir HFA Inhalation Aerosol,
* Proventil HFA Inhalation Aerosol, and
* Ventolin HFA Inhalation Aerosol.

FDA has also approved Xopenex HFA Inhalation Aerosol, an HFA inhaler with the active ingredient levalbuterol tartrate. This inhaler contains the active form of albuterol and does the same thing as albuterol. "

********
Another reason to stock up, if you can:
" What programs will be in place to help patients get the albuterol MDI they need, since the albuterol HFA MDI currently cost 20 dollars more per MDI than the generic CFC MDIs?

HHS/FDA is encouraged that the manufacturers of the three HFA products are implementing programs to help assure access to these albuterol MDIs for patients for whom price could be a significant barrier to access to this important medicine. These programs include MDI giveaways, coupons for reducing the price paid and patient-assistance programs based on financial need."

http://www.fda.gov/CDER/mdi/mdifaqs.htm

********
It really is lame, the FDA is putting asthmatics and others with lung disease at risk by forcing them to use lesser tested & known inhalers, AND to use inhalers that are much more expensive just to save a little ozone. Why don't they ban cigarettes instead? 10|2|This biz w/albuterol being discontinued has really ticked me off!|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|16:44:44|10/31/2008|

I've had Pro-vent & it does NOT work anything like the Albuterol inhalers. :( I am currently using Albuterol only because I've been able to get it at my local Walmart pharmacy, for now.
What burns my butt is that some idiot on a power trip happened to have a bunch of money to blow & decided they wanted to put up a stink about Albuterol inhalers being harmful to the ozone layer. It's a bunch of b.s.!! Think about it. If anyone thinks discontinuing a little inhaler, which actually HELPS people breathe despite all this polluted air, can even remotely make a difference in the ozone layer, compared to the harmful emissions from all the factories, vehicles, aviation vehicles, nuclear power plants & loads of other things, then I really must be from Venus cuz it's the most ridiculous bunch of crap I've ever heard! :( I can't believe there are people out there, especially involved w/the FDA, who actually buy into it. Ugh & double UGH!!

Ventolin is a brand name for the drug albuterol. It is a rescue inhaler, it isn't meant to prevent asthma attacks.

Aerobid (flunisolide} is a steroid to prevent attacks.
Serevent is another drug [salmeterol] for long-term prevention of symptoms. Neither Aerobid nor Servent should every be used to treat asthma ATTACKS. They are not rescue inhalers.

Rescue inhalers should not be used in the place of asthma control meds like Aerobid, Servent or Advair.

Asthma kills far too many children and adults every year. Do not let asthma be improperly treated.

The initial discussion was on the change in propellant gases in the inhalers, not a change in the basic medications themselves. 17|7|I think I've tried most of the other ones|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|23:25:41|10/31/2008|

and they just don't give you those deep breaths like albuterol does. I've been holding off calling to get a refill since I don't have insurance right now, but I guess I'd better bite the bullet if I want to have any chance of still finding one more albuterol inhaler out there.

I have 2 who use inhalers (DD and DH) and they ran out over the summer. Being broke, we just bought one of those wimpy kinds (can't recall what it is called, but DH does not like it). My 8 yr old seems to have trouble with her asthma in the winter months because colds really trigger it and anytime she is exposed to sickness she seems to struggle with it. I was not even thinking about the importance of stockpiling this, so this thread is a real wake up call for me this morning and I suspect it will prevent us from an ER run later this year.

I'll be searching for albuterol this week! THANK YOU!!!!

The other meds aren't supposed to "give you deep breaths". They are supposed to make it so you don't need medications to give you deep breaths.

My son has had asthma since he was 2 (almost died from it when he was 11 months old). He's been on Advair for 7 years and he takes it every day, twice a day and he has not had a bad asthma attack since he was on Advair. He is now 17, a competitive athlete and only uses albuterol when he is doing sports - and he used to be on it three times a day miniumum, and couldn't play sports. It does work if you take it regularly!

It's not as though they did away with albuterol all together. Albuterol was in the old CFC inhalers and it is in the new HFA inhalers. It's just that the inhaler itself delivers like a softer spray instead of a strong one like the old inhalers. I use a spacer anyway, so it does not make much of a difference to me. I don't use the albuterol that often, since I use other meds for maintenance. I just wanted to let you guys know that it is not as though they got rid of albuterol---it's still in the new inhalers! :)

I don't need a twice daily preventative inhaler like advair....it's only in certain situations where I find myself having a hard time breathing. I might only need to use an inhaler a half a dozen times a year (sometimes more, sometimes less), and when it hits, albuterol does a wayyyyy better job. And like Tami said, it helps more with loosening that stuff in your lungs when you need it.

I haven't read the articles behind the reasoning for this change, maybe I should, because on the surface it looks like a crazy, ridiculous, beauracratic decision to get rid of them.
