Please don't take offense, but your post reminded me of a discussion I recently had with 6 year olds about the election. I was subbing for a first grade class and we we talking about our community in Social Studies. The discussion went from laws to the leaders of our community (mayors, govenors, etc). Then our book talked about the president being the leader of the country and I mentioned to the class that we would soon be picking a new leader/President. I told them that adults would either vote for a man named John McCain or Barrack Obamaa. As soon as the words Barrack Obama left my mouth 3 little first graders were very adamantly saying "No, we don't want Barrack Obama". I was shocked that they not only knew who he was but were so against him. So I asked them why they didn't want him to be President. One little boy said "Barrack Obama isn't an American, he was born in Mexico" Another little boy said, "I don't like him because he doesn't like the flag" and a little girl said " I don't want him to be President cause I want a lady to be President (she was a bit on confused on who was going to actually be Pres. on the McCain/Palin ticket...lol)
I just thought it was funny how the things they hear can get so distorted. BTW, I did explain that Barrack Obama had to be an American to run for President. : )
