It's about a thrifty family. I heard something about feeding your family dinner for $4. I'm sure its all about the coupons and rebate stuff. I'm hoping to maybe pick up something new I can do.

Thanks!

I thought the thrifty couple pointed out the obvious. That couple should have known to quit buying video games, movies and whatever they buy for $650/mo on department store credit cards. I mean, come on! Am I supposed to feel sorry for them not being able to buy their kids DVDs the DAY they come out?? They didn't already know to cut the frivilous spending and eating out? They are obviously educated people. They make, or made, above-average incomes. When the wife lost her job, did nothing change for them? Did they just keep on living like they were used to?

That portion of the show just really irritated me. It was just so unrealistic.

I dont keep recipes I just cook with what I have on hand and from being creative.

I love when making dinner and it only costs me a few dollars. Theres a store near me called save a lot and yes you can save a lot. I buy jar sauce, yea I know jar sauce you might say yuck but it really tastes good. Sometimes I even add a green pepper to it to add an extra something for flavor.

The jar sauce is 99cents and I buy pasta for 99cents or less so when I make pasta dinner it only costs me about $2.

Also I make mac and cheese, store brand when on sale is 4 for a $1 and add either broccoli or peas to it so that dinner also costs me about $2

Pasta and garlic with butter is also a great easy cheap meal and runs me about $2 or less

Stuffed cabbage is so good and cheap. I stuff the cabbage with stuffing, potatoes, corn or rice and this dinner costs me about $3

Grilled cheese and soup is a warm filling meal and it costs me about $3

A bag of potatoes goes a long way.I usually buy a bag of potatoes and cook them up in the crock pot. Then Im able to use them in a few dinners, breakfasts. I make shepards pie from some of the potatoes and again this meal costs about $2.

Im a BIG fan of beans. They are cheap and fill you up and again only cost about $2 for dinners.I like to add beans to rice or pasta.

When I make dinners that cost me about $2 I love to tell everyone that will listen. I dont eat meat but my family does so I usually buy say boneless chicken and split them up into freezer bags. When I make any of my cheap meals I will cook up some chicken/meat and I dont have to use the whole package because the rest of the dinner is so filling.

Also I love apple sauce and find it so much cheaper to buy the individual cups because when I buy the jar we eat it once then the rest goes to waste. If I buy the 6cup pack it costs about $2 but you get 6 servings so It goes a long way.

I have many more ideas but these are my favs. Hope this can help someone. 6|1|I seen it and what were they thinking $650 a month|kaydee1459|kaydee1459@yahoo.com|08:57:35|10/09/2008|

in video games and movies. It was clear what they were doing wrong and shouldn't had to have someone tell them .Plus other things. I don't do credit cards . And I try very hard to do the best saving with coupons and sales that I can. We don't have double or triples here so Can't due as good as others but I try. I also would like to know $2 meals. LOL! 7|2|i did a less than $2 meal last night! :)|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|09:31:47|10/09/2008|

winn-dixie had boneless pork chops on sale b1g1 so here's what i did:

2 - packs bonelss chops @ 4.97 each - 2 $2 any meat winetags = .97 for both

here's what we had for dinner:

2 - easy mac cups = free after double co's at kmart
1 - box jiffy muffin mix (used water instead of milk) 6/.33 = .055 each = .11
1 egg (for the muffin mix) 12/1.89 = .16 EACH .16/6 = .03 per muffin adn we ate 2 = .06
1/2 can glory skillet corn 1.39 = .70
1 pk boneless porkchops (and they were already seasoned in the store!) .48

(this was a meal for 2)

and pj had 6 chicken nuggets and some fries...

6 - nuggets = 3.29 for the pack of 44 after co = .07 each = .44
a few fries = 1.89 divided by i'd say 12 pj size servings i guess = .16
2 packs mcdonalds ketchup FREE
total for pj's meal = .60

total cost for dinner: $1.95 plus my time to cook and any energy costs.

AND i have 4 muffins along with 1/2 a can of corn and 1 leftover chop for dinner tomorrow night. :)

now, tonight will be a different story, we are having chicken and dumplings and the cost for that was $6.24 (after coupons of course) but we'll get at least 2 meals out of it if not more. (it really depends on how hungry patrick is tonight) lol

That is crazy, I watched the whole show and to be honest the thrifty couple I suppose was thrifty, but I also read the article they had in the Parade Sunday Mag a few months ago and did not learn anything I had not already known about. The thrifty family lives off of 58,000 a year and to me that is not a bad income at all, sure they are able to save too, but there are way to many people that live off WAY less than that. As for the family that the thrify couple tried to help, I actually was disappointed that they were the family "chosen" to be helped, if they make that much money a month and waste it away that is their own problem. They did not have any credit card debt and the house was really large and looked very nice, and like others said $650 just at departments stores every month THATS CRAZY!!! Sorry I kinda venting, but I was really hoping to see how to save some money or some tips from people that make an average wage in this crazy time.

Have a good one :)
