It's unusual for kids to get b and d confused past first grade. If he also is writing numbers backwards, like a 3 that looks like an E or a 6, 5, 7 backwards, then that could be a sign of problems. I know that as a former teacher, we were asked to refer kids who had this problem past first grade. Some were fine, just "late bloomers", but others had various learning difficulties. This is not meant to scare you, just help if possible.
