bailing out incompetent and greedy companies for their huge mistakes while the regular american isn't getting any sort of bailout for their "mistakes" or situation. However, if we do not have this bail out things will get significantly worse. Not to be able to get credit is horrible. If companies/people can't get credit their companies will shut down and where does that leave the worker of that company? out of work. It'll be a widespread problem. This by far is no cure all but something has to happen very very soon. I think it is truly incompetent of our elected officials that they don't want to make an ugly decision about this b/c they are afraid they aren't going to get reelected. That's too bad. They signed up for this and have to hold their nose and jump in. It sucks for everyone. but it'll just get worse.

at least with the current plan that was rejected the taxpayer will pay (and it'll suck) but at least we are investors and maybe will get the money back. I'm not counting on that money down the line but it'll be nice to hope it comes.

the sad thing is that the plan didn't include homeowners with bad mortgages. They should have ruled on including them in the plan. so the judges can renegotiate their mortgages to an amount they are able to pay instead of foreclosing which will cost the costpayer alot more. It costs $225, 000 for each foreclosure. that's insane! who pays for that? we do. so isn't it better to help them pay for what they can pay for? The democrats wanted it and didn't get it.

But even w/ this stall this plan will go through. It has to. The stall is just delaying the inevitable. 15|8|I think that things will be worse...for awhile...but I'd rather deal with it now than leave it my children to deal with later...and that is what will happen if we do a bail out now...when will it stop? How many more times will they do this in the coming year or years? |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|12:57:01|09/30/2008|

by a string. And once they crumble they will all crumble fast. It's hard to think abotu a future for your children when you will have trouble holding on to the things that help raise them..like your house, car, etc. Not being able to get credit to buy that new/used car, or house that you can afford or anything will cause major major problems. Not to mention all the jobs that will be lost. not to mention all the pensions that are dwindling down to nothing. yesterday's debacle on wall street sent millions of peoples pensions crashing down. It can't happen. 17|5|Having a good day. It will be better if this bailout continues to be rejected. Companies default and we shoul have to bail them out and give them bonuses? Times are tough for all. These businesses need to bear down and tighten their spending, starting with the ABSURD bonuses.
Maybe if all them collectively gave up their BONUSES ( Which they certainly didn't earn this time around) we wouldn't need a bailout.

P.S. Maybe Wall Street can get a loan from the OIL industry. They certainly have cash to spare.

Kristy, I totally agree! Why is it that regular working people should be bailing out wall street? Does not seem right to me. I even called my senators about it last week because I was so worked up. Actually it seems like I manage to call them every so often about something or another-- I like to let them know that someone around here is watching what they are doing.

It will be interesting to see what happens next.

President Bush has the ability to STOP THE ELECTION process, deeming it a bad thing to do at a bad time. There was political pressure from him to give loans to low income and miniorities. If you didn't loan to them the justice dept. would come after you for discrimination. It was called anti redlining. SO companies started giving loans to every tom, dick and harry so they didn't get in trouble with the gov't . That was the gov't first mistake sticking their nose into private businesses. Then to make things worse they want to now do this financial bail out when it won't come from any of their pockets. Who will be hurt by the bail out.. you and me. The average tax payer. The businesses who made this mess should pay for it. Their companies should fold.. and ergo their 'kickcbacks' to Obama and the like will end!!

Bail the homeowner out(which would pay the banks), save their homes, help keep families together and give us money to flood back into the economy....I would vote for that...b4 paying it back for nothing....would it not work out the same? fund the First Lady's plan for underpriveleged children. The plan got shut down b/c there was no money in the budget. He, as the President, sat all the heads down and went over the budget line by line and got rid of all the pointless, pork laden programs, to make room for her budget of $600 million or something like that. It was a great scene and I wish our politicians would act like that. Be frugal the way we are. Spend on stuff you really need and dispense with the junk. But unfortunately they have to give back to all those people who got them into office in the first place by financing their campaign so they have to have those porky programs in their. If you need to take a big loss in a deal with the likes of Warren Buffett (with massive protection for purchaser) or can wait for a chance for a full bailout with not too much oversight from the Feds, which would you choose if you are a greedy financier? A bailout would certainly work for them, but there's no guarantee that it will work for the average person. 54|1|and all this because Steve said hello...:)|freebiejunkie|joelpoole@msn.com|14:28:33|09/30/2008|

a smaller hit I say let them go under there is still asset value to these companies and the bad debt is not going away even though other companies are buying the straight profit divisions of these "failing institutions" there are many people waiting for the opportunity to scoop up the pieces of these companies like Buffett and Mark Cuban they have been putting Billions into the market because they know this is the time to buy. there are even companies that will and are buying the bad assets of these failures because they will take the risk and rewards that go with trying to make them into performing assets again. Cuban had a good idea about financing some sort of buyout with individual investment. The govt gets there money back in real time the taxpayers feel only a little hit and the investors solidify the markets. The times are tough right now but believe me as things start getting better ice cream containers will not go back to 1/2 gallon size and bread will still be over $2 for a regular sized loaf you will have been adjusted to them at that time. Put your money in smaller regional financial institutions with low exposure to bad loans if you are looking at the market or move your money into other bargain areas such as real estate which is cheap right now. Think about this example Bugatti went out of business in the late 30's about 10=15 years ago an entreprenuer bought the name from whomever held title to it and started making these again. The names of some companies hold value even after they have been shuttered think someone might want to take a shot at reopening E.F. Hutton that disappeared in a merger. It is time for people to think and act not react.

Dr. Paul’s House floor remarks on the bailout
September 29th, 2008 by Matt Hawes

The process of this bailout reminds me of a panic-stricken swimmer thrashing in the water only making his situation worse. Even a “bipartisan deal”—whatever that is supposed to mean— will not stop the Congress from thrashing about.

The beneficiaries of the corrupt monetary system of the last three decades are now desperately looking for victims to stick with the bill after they have reaped decades of profit and privilege.

The difficulties in our economy will continue because the Legislative and the Executive branches have not yet begun to address the real problems. The housing bubble’s collapse, as was the Dot Com bubble’s collapse, was predictable and is merely a symptom of the monetary system that brought us to this point.

Indeed, we do face a major crisis but it is much bigger than the freezing up of Wall Street and dealing with worthless assets on the books of major banks. The true crisis is the pending collapse of the fiat dollar system that emerged after the breakdown of the Bretton Woods agreement in 1971.

For 37 years the world built a financial system based on the dollar as the reserve currency of the world in an attempt to make the dollar serve as the new standard of value. However since 1971, the dollar has had no intrinsic value, as it is not tied to gold. The dollar is simply a fiat currency, which has fluctuated in value on a daily, if not hourly, bias. This worked to some degree until the market realized that too much debt and malinvestment existed and a correction was required.

Because of our economic and military strength, compared to other countries, trust in America’s currency lasted longer than deserved. This resulted in the biggest worldwide economic distortion in all of history. The problem is much bigger than the fears of a temporary decline on Wall Street if the bailout is not agreed to.

Money’s most important function is to serve as a means of exchange—a measurement of value. If this crucial yardstick is not stable, it becomes impossible for investors, entrepreneurs, savers, and consumers to make correct decisions; these mistakes create the bubble that must eventually be corrected.

Just imagine the results if a construction company was forced to use a yardstick whose measures changed daily to construct a skyscraper. The result would be a very unstable and dangerous building. No doubt the construction company would try to cover up their fundamental problem with patchwork repairs, but no amount of patchwork can fix a building with an unstable inner structure. Eventually, the skyscraper will collapse, forcing the construction company to rebuild—hopefully this time with a stable yardstick. This 700 billion package is more patchwork repair and will prove to be money down a rat hole and will only make the dollar crisis that much worse.

But what politicians are willing to say that the financial “skyscraper”—the global financial and monetary system-is a house of cards. It is not going to happen at this juncture. They’re not even talking about this. They talk only of bailouts, more monetary inflation, more special interest spending, more debt, and more regulations. There is almost no talk of the relationship of the Community Reinvestment Act, HUD, and government assisted loans to the housing bubble. And there is no talk of the oversight that is desperately needed for the Federal Reserve, the Exchange Stabilization Fund, and all the activities of the President’s Working Group on financial markets. When these actions are taken we will at last know that Congress is serious about the reforms that are really needed.

In conclusion, there are three good reasons why Congress should reject this legislation:

a. It is immoral—Dumping bad debt on the innocent taxpayers is an act of theft and is wrong.

b. It is unconstitutional—There is no constitutional authority to use government power to serve special interests.

c. It is bad economic policy—By refusing to address the monetary system while continuing to place the burdens of the bailout on the dollar, we can be certain that in time, we will be faced with another, more severe crisis when the market figures out that there is no magic government bailout or regulation that can make a fraudulent monetary system work.

Monetary reform will eventually come, but, unfortunately, Congress’ actions this week make it more likely the reform will come under dire circumstances, such as the midst of a worldwide collapse of the dollar. The question then will be how much of our liberties will be sacrificed in the process. Just remember what we lost in the aftermath of 9-11.

The best result we can hope for is that the economic necessity of getting our fiscal house in order will, at last, force us to give up our world empire. Without the empire we can then concentrate on rebuilding the Republic.
