This is no fun!!!!

exactly how the pill preparation works?

I recently had a colonoscopy drinking the liquid stuff and almost couldn't have the procedure because I threw up most of the stuff shorty after I drank it :(

I'm interested in trying the pills next time cause drinking the liquid was just too nauseating for me.

What exactly do you have to do? 2|2|See Inside for details|debmac2|mcsport6@comcast.net|18:11:17|09/28/2008|

You must take 20 pills for a full hour starting at 3PM. In other words, at 3:00 you take 4 pills, at 3:15 you take 4 pills, at 3:30 you take 4 pills, at 3:45 you take 4 pills and at 4:00 you take 4 pills -- UGH!!! You must drink 8 fluid ounces of clear liquid each time.

You must repeat this procedure again at 8PM, only this time you take 12 pills. At 8:00 you take 3 pills, at 8;15 you take 3 pills, at 8:30 you take 3 pills and at 8:45 you take the final 3 pills!!!! Once again you must drink the 8 fluid ounces of clear liquid each time.

These pills are quite large. Had no problem the first few times, but by 4:00, I was gagging taking the pill while drinking that much fluid. I too have had so many tests that required taking the drink preparation ahead of time, so I thought the pill method would be a better option. Even though I am only halfway through this prep, I would like to think I will stick with the pills if I have to go through this horrible procedure again!!

The last one just this past spring. She said there was nothing to it w/the worst part being having to drink the liquid. This last time, however, she didn't have to drink more than a couple ounces 2 times & immediately before the procedure, they gave her a drug that not only relaxed her but made her "forget" the whole procedure. ;)

I used to think it was to reduce any potential swelling but he said he did it to try & numb it up good. LOL I never dared ask if it worked cuz it wasn't something he cared to talk about. LOL

I was just saying yesterday that I will probably never opt to take that test. I can't drink the liquid stuff-- doesn't stay with me!!! Also, since my gastric bypass I don't think I could drink that much anyway. As for the pill idea... would be tough, but I think I could do that.

I didn't realize you still had to drink 40 ounces of liquid WITH the 20 pills the first hour :( and then another 40 ounces of liquid again.

That's not much better than just drinking the liquid.

I am so disappointed -- I thought you just took the pills without having to drink so much liquid. 15|1|Thinking about you & hoping all is done & over with & all ok. :)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|18:23:14|09/29/2008|

First of all, Debbie? Please let us know how it goes, okay? You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Brainsmommy? I'm sorry to hear that your mom passed away so young. I was 40 when I got Colon cancer but mine was caught in time. It's been 10 years and I had a survival rate of 60% with 6 months of chemo. Since it can run in a family please get colonoscopies. Kristy, also and anybody who has had someone with Colon cancer. And anybody after a certain age should have one also. I know they are unpleasant but it's better to be safe then sorry.

Debbie, I'm glad I found this thread too because i'm due for mine now and I might try the pills over that ghastly liquid if they give me this option. If you can find the right people to go to who KNOW what they are doing, the only unpleasant part about the procedure is the prep of drinking the liquid or taking the pills. I go to a place where they put you out. The only complaint i've ever had there, was that they tend to make you wait so long and when you've drank that junk and you've been fasting, I think it's kind of thoughtless of them to make you wait in the waiting room so long. The last time I had this done, I woke up saying some really silly things, something about having fleas.. embarressing, more then bearing my butt. I DO have a lizard tatoo... i'm sure THAT caused lots of laughs.

Let us know the results, Debbie.. HUGS.. i'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Liz aka destiny

And yes, I agree with Destiny. If there's a family history, please get checked!!!! The prep the day before is the worst part. But it is soooo worth it for the peace of mind. Cindy 20|3|I made out well! PHEWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!|debmac2|mcsport6@comcast.net|16:30:41|09/30/2008|

Not a bad procedure after all ... more fearful of the unknown, but that is only natural. They sedated me well, thankfully, and woke up with no discomfort!

I was told that I have NO Diverticulitis! Also said I have significant scarring on my colon from previous surgeries( had a Pheochromocytoma and had my spleen removed many years ago). I get to see the dr. next week for a follow-up so I will question him about what that means, if anything.

Thanks for all the kind words... glad it is over!! Do not have to have one done now for quite a few years( I am 43 years old)

Debbie 21|1|it's 2008 -- why can't they find a way to make the prep easier? |KellyJef|burke3536@yahoo.com|08:29:37|10/01/2008|

everybody realizes that the colonscopy itself is a breeze -- it's the prep that is truly brutal (at least for some people).

I found the prep absolutely horrible and dread the thought of the next one :(

I know it's a BIG relief to have it over but we learn to get unpleasant things out of the way so that we don't have to worry about them later. Yes.. when you go back in, ask the dr any questions you have and make him explain everything to you.

I am putting it off.. i'm due for one this year so i'd better practice what i preach!
