speaking at all. He says a few words but that's about it. he understands everything in armenian and english and does follow through when given direction so I know he hears well and is understanding what I'm saying. but he isn't speaking. His dr's appt is next week and I'll bring it up then but just wondering if you had these issues and if it manifested into longer term speech problems.

I am also calling a speech therapist to evaluate him but I wanted to know your experiences in this matter.
thanks! 1|1|5 Sons here, all grown now...boys are less chatty, very pensive.|BMOREGAL|bmoregal2000@aol.com|09:54:47|09/24/2008|

My oldest spoke late but read early...go figure, all 5 have degrees, i think it helps to let them know you want them to use words...i also started using some ASL {sign}, he appaers to be learning double languages which is terrific...does he say Mom or dad?...both girls talked before end of first year.i think music encourages language as well and a play group would be benificial as well.. keep ttalking and he will come around, hope this helps 2|2|It does help. The thing is he isn't quiet at all. He babbles, sings, etc. |jilda|vze4gj4m@verizon.net|10:08:19|09/24/2008|

We got her involved with birth to three(may be under another name in your state) that is sponsored by easter seals. Didn't cost us a sent, and they cam eto the 3 times week to do speech tharapy. Also they were a huge help in getting my daughter into public preschool(again free), and seeing to it, that she was transitioned well.

Really can not say one bad thing about the whole experience, so I would call easter seals in your area. ALso, you doctor may have the info as well. Donna

My daughter Sophie will be 3 in November..She says 5 words. I brought this up to the doctors for over a year. Finally we saw a different dr. and she called EI (Early Intervention?)right away. I had 3 peple come in (a speech evaluater, a behavioral instructionist ?, and a social worker who just comes to get a family history). The speech lady was done with her in less than 10 minutes. Because Sophie understands everything the lady didn't want her to qualify for services. She said she needs speech but I should find some other program because the kids have to show a 30% delay in 5 areas to qualify. I was not happy. Anyway, I explained what happened to the next 2 women that came and although they said they cannot do anything about the evaluation test they can be vague in their report. I got the report in July and it says things like she cannot walk down stairs or wipe her nose which is so not true but she did get services 2 x a week..Now I have to take her to a CPSE evaluation becase she ages out of EI in November (it's only up to age 3)I have been calling the evaluation site for over 3 weeks and finally called a different place this morning and I am awaiting an appointment date.
It has been alot of running around but I knew she needed help. The doctors and everyone were telling me she is just lazy, or I should stop comparing her to my other daughter who started talking at like 8 months and hasn't stopped yet (she's 6)I had been saying it for over a year and no one would listen to me. Now the same people who said she's still little and I am rushing her are saying I waited too long.
The services she is getting are NOT helping her though. She now covers her ears and tells the therapist "no" half the time she's here (1/2 hour). She no longer wants to read books with me and ges very upset if I ask her to repeat a word or anything like that. Everyone says she needs to be put in a nursery program and she will be just fine but I am a little worried.

Do what you think is right. I should have pushed it more but I let everyone tell me I was overreacting. I bought a bunch of Buddy Bear books (the therapist uses them) and some nice puzzles from AC Moore for 50% off of course and we have been working on that..I would at least request the evaluation if you are worried. It can't hurt and at least if the child does need services you can begin right away...

People too weak to follow their own dreams will always find a way to discourage yours.... 5|2|Yes that's what I plan on doing. The services here are offered for free from 2-3 years old. So that is |jilda|vze4gj4m@verizon.net|11:01:43|09/24/2008|

why I waited til now to get him evaluated. I'll see what she says and then take it from there. But at 2 I'm hoping it's early enough to assess and deal with the problem. I'm sorry you are going through such a hard time. with my first son I had to get rid of our pediatrician, who got glowing reports from almost everyone, b/c she just wasn't hearing me and freaked out about the littlest thing> here she is a dr and I'm a first time mom and I was more calm than she was. so we fired her and got someone a lot more relaxed. Trust your instincts. I hate when drs think they know more about your kid (good or bad) more than you do and they don't listen. 6|1|some kids just don't like to talk but calling early intervention|glennie58|glenn_scott@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu|19:47:08|09/24/2008|

for an evaluation is always a good idea and the services are free until 3 years old if they think he needs them. good luck! 7|1|My daughter talked earlier and clearer than my 3 year old... he kind of lagged behind there, but we think it was becaue he was mastering another skill instead.|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|08:43:27|09/25/2008|

Since yours is a bi-lingual household, maybe that is normal? If you do a search of bilingual and late talkers, you will find a few things that I did...

Do ask about it if it concerns you. Glad you found a good pediatrician. We have one and while there's a new group closer to us, he is worth the drive because we have always gotten good care and gotten in when we needed to get in.
