I've had the account since my son was 13 years old, he is now 21 and even after all these years my account balance was only $8.31, I saw no point in keeping it any longer and just called them now to close my account...I did'nt expect to get anything but they are sending me a check for $8.31 and should get it in 4 weeks..

I withdrew my current balance from mine earlier in the year but still kept it open and still earning money.

Click on more under the heading "my account"
The 4th question down is
"Can I withdraw company contributions from my Upromise account without transferring them to a savings plan, and if so, how?"
There are the directions and link to the form you must fill out to make the withdrawl provided your funds are available and not already invested.

I withdraw every time the account hits a certain dollar amount (so about 2-3 times per year). The check is made payable to the adult named on the account. They only cut checks at the end of the quarter, so when you request a withdrawal it may be awhile before you get the check if you miss the cutoff for that quarter.
