Hi
Congrats, hope you can make a go at it.

The library has lots of books on Small Business start up including plans, etc.

All of Matthew Lesko's books have lots of information about how to find money to start businesses.

Contact the small business administration, they will send you a free Business Start up kit.

Your local chamber of commerce will have info on licensure rules, guidelines, etc.

The IRS also gives you info on taxes regarding business/self employed.

Go to askjeeves.com and search for Small Business Info

Actually, you will be amazed at the amount of info available.

*not sure the name of the site, but you can do a search and go to the small business admin website.

Hope this helps.
*I have several of the lesko books, when i have time later, i can give you some of the links/resources noted in the book.

Mary Ann

PS What type of biz are you looking into? just curious

the type of business im thinking of is a used kids clothing store.. There is one here in town and the lady does AWSOME.. i went there today and realized how jam packed her store is.. its to the point where you cant really walk in there anymore.. so i got to really thinking.. (because i sell alot of kids clothing now on ebay) that if i was to open my own used kids clothing store, then maybe i would be able to do as well as she.. Because once her store is that packed, its harder to get the newer stuff out that people are bringing in, and will take alot longer for there stuff to sell. (others that bring stuff in get profit off of it as well) so i figured a newer store opening up would make others bring there stuff to my store considering i can put it out right away for them to start making money.. This other store gives you 50% of what it sells for and keeps the other 50% for her business.. and people buy the stuff. She is ALWAYS busy every time i go there.. I actually buy stuff from her to list on ebay for a profit myself. :) I just think without ebay fees, paypal fees, etc.. that maybe i can start my own little buisness like she has. I really thought about asking her, but didnt think she would tell me anything becuase that would be competing with her. Know what i mean. lol.. anyways, does that sound like a good thing?? or am i just being silly thinking theres money to make in it?

I know quite a few young moms and they all seem to adore Once Upon a Child. I've never been there, and actually have never been to a strictly children clothing resale consignment shop, but I've heard it's really nice. Of course, Once Upon a Child is a franchise (owned by the same folks as Play it Again Sports & Plato's Closet)but I'm sure an individually owned shop would do just as well. Just a thought: There's a resale shop in Jenison, MI (never been there, but I always pass it) that sells children's clothing as well as maternity clothes. It's been there for quite a while.

And to answer your question, no I do not think you're crazy for thinking there's money to be made. I think there definitely is. Most children grow out of their clothing so fast they don't have time to even begin to wear it out. And sadly, no one seems to want more than two kids anymore (usually one boy & one girl) so there's no one to have "hand-me-downs"! But on the other hand, that is exactly what will keep you in business.

If you do decide to start a business - examine, examine, examine! Good resale shops have an excellent reputation for having immaculate clothing. Not even the teeniest tiniest flaw can exist.

I myself want to get into business eventually, but I think I'd be more likely to sell from my own website and/or consign. Nothing related at all to children's clothing. More along the lines of the designers on www.cutxpaste.com (which is a website done on consignment).

So yeah - go for it! And remember, it won't go anywhere without advertising. Don't count on word-of-mouth. =)
Keep us updated!

I thought about it along time ago but evertime something like once a upon a child or whatever else has came here it went under geuss its just too small of a town or something. Anyways my thought are if you do this find a cheap place to rent but decorate really cute KWIM & then I think it would do better in certain areas you know so I would research those areas of town. I hope it all works out wonderful for you.

My DH and I attended a free informational session at at local college, and the SBA is specifically set up as a not for profit organization to help new small business owners and those who want to start a small business....the info was free, and they will also give free personal consultations to help you one on one....
They help you draw up a business plan (a MUST for starting a small business!!) and will direct you to investors and market strategies to help your business grow. They will even help plan a grand opening for your business with you! :) They will also help you develop a logo and business name!
