I'm not sure if this is the board to share this but..... My son went on a picnic with a school
friend on Saturday. It was a water park the weather here was warm and overcast..Well my son came home
BURNT!!! I mean burnt. Will he's very fair skined and 9 years old so he's not to up on the sunburm thing as far as to put sun screen on or that fact a shirt. Will Monday I took him to the doctors and he has 2nd and third degree burns on his back, shoulders, alittle on his face. A friend of mine says that I should call this mother up, not in a rude way but to let her know what he's been dealing with and what he looks like with the blisters on his skin, So my question do I just let it go or do I say something. Thanks for input. Betty

Yes, I would gently approach the subject such that you could say that next time you would appreciate her help in making sure your son is protected from the sun. I am fairskinned myself and my twin isn't, so she tans and I burn. Maybe her sun is more of a tanner than a burner and it didn't occur to her.

in my opinion it was not ALL her fault. When my kids go somewhere I always send sunscreen with them. If you didn't send any, the mom may have thought that you'd already applied it prior or that you weren't concerned. If it were me and we were going to a waterpark, I'd have asked the guest child and applied my own sunscreen if he'd said he didn't have any. Not all moms are as concerned about others' kids as they are their own. However, I think I would have noticed the child getting red, and told him to put on a shirt and applied sunscreen anyway to prevent further damage. The child would probably have burned anyway since by the time you can see the red the damage is already done, but maybe not as bad as it was. I mean, did she apply it to her own child, or was he fried too? If he got it too, then obviously the mom wasn't being responsible, and probably is learning a lesson from her own miserable son.
I've had blistering sunburn before and it's no fun. Hope your son feels better soon, and take this opportunity to teach a lesson about sunscreen. Make sure he never goes without it.

Shelia

this stuff really works and is very soothing to the skin. If this was my child, I would've put on sunblock before going on this trip. Hope he feels better soon. HTH, Sharon:)

I think you should call up the parent and ask if her son got a burn. And talk about your sons burn. My son got burnt like that one time and it's not fun for parent or child. As far as sunscreen. I think even if you applied it before he left the parent should have made sure it was applied again. Not sure how the sun is there but here in Texas it's every 3 hours or you burn. We go to the waterpark 3 days a week and if we are there more then 3 hours I make everyone reapply. We took my daughters friend today and the first thing I asked when we she got in the car is if she had sunscreen on. She said she did. We were only there for 2 hours so I didn't reapply but I would have got her to do it too if we were there longer. Regardless of what she would have said.

Because the same thing happened to me when I was younger. Sis-in-law took me to a waterpark to basically watch her kids (shes an ex now) I put sunscreen on before we left, but had no idea that we would be there that long or that she didn't pack any extra. Needless to say I had huge bubbles and blisters the next day. Mom was so po-ed she couldn't see straight. I would definetly say something to the other mom, that was just being irresponsible.
As for you son, poor fellow, Aloe Vera and lots of it, is the only thing I know. Hope he gets better soon.

have put the sun screen, (long lasting waterproof) on him before he went. I also would have talked to him before he went or the mom about him putting on a shirt if he looks like he is burning. In fact my child went to a water park with others, he was older but I still went through the drill. Her child might not burn and so that might not be an issue for her. I have another child that can be out all day and just brown not burn. Even so, I would tell her about it, being careful not to lay blaim.

We lived in Oklahoma and I was just sitting by the pool for an hour. My daughter burns too so I always make sure she has sunscreen with her. I think I would just call and ask her if her son got burnt, like others mentioned. But not be rude about it, she may feel that it was your responsibility to make sure your son had sunscreen.

really your child's well being is your responsibility. I mean if she had put sun screen on at home and didn't have any with her for your son, would she have to buy some to make sure he is OK in the sun?

If that woman took her son with her, she took responsibility for the child.

I would talk to the other mom and not be at all accussatory or judgemental, but just say that next time they go out you are going to be sending sunscreen and to please make sure that he re-applies it liberally during the day. I wouldn't make it sound like her job, at 9 he should be able to do it but he needs someone to make sure he has covered everywhere. She may not have thought about sunscreen if it was overcast because some people don't realize how badly you can burn in cloudy conditions. I would not hesitate to let he know how bad the burn is in case her son got burned that bad. If he did, she might want to have him checked by a doc also. Severe burns in childhood can lead to skin cancer later in life. This is from personal family experience.

You can put vinegar on burns to take away the sting also.

I always apply aloe very generously on my burns and even after the burn part of the burn is gone I use lotion very liberally. Make sure the lotion has vitamin E
