I don't have any garage sale tips for you though. We live out in the boonies, so we don't have yard sales. Plus we don't get any good deals here in Fl, the land of no doubles/triples. I wish I could help you though.

Thank you,

try to put your big stuff in sight, so people can see these from the road. make sure everything is priced, i personally hate garage sales where stuff is "up for bartering" or "make offer". try to keep like stuff together, like all the holiday stuff, clothes, etc... hth

PLEASE LEAVE FEEDBACK IF WE HAVE HAD A GOOD TRADE!!!

I did really well with the stockpiles I had....hairspray, deoderant, shampoo, body wash, dish detergent. Hair coloring did not go at all...which is kind of understandable.

Ours was part of a street long advertised sale, so there were ALOT of people come through. I don't have too many tips other than the obvious....BIG signs so people can see you, spread things out along the driveway (or wherever) so people take their time looking, have bags ready so people can carry their stuff in.

I always use a fanny pack so that my money is right nearby and I don't have to worry that someone will take it.

Lauren

PS You don't smell...but it is the holiday weekend so not many people around to post probably. Also there was a post about garage sales a few weeks ago that many already posted to....the link is below:

1. Schedule it the beginning of the month. People have more money then as some of us just get paid once a month.

2. Be organized. Have items in boxes ready to haul outside. Don't make a lot of trips inside to get items when you can haul them out at once. You'll be exhausted before it even starts if you don't.

3. Price items "evenly" -- $1 or 50 cents. Have very few dime and nickel items unless you really want to get rid of something. If you just flat out don't want it anymore and don't care if you get anything for it, mark it FREE and have a box of FREE items for people to root around in. People love FREE anything (as we all know).

4. Have everything marked in price.

5. Display items at table height level if possible.

6. Don't run your sale late. You'll have most of your traffic before 9:30 AM.

7. If you are seriously cleaning out and don't want the items that are left, call your local charity (here it's St. Vincent DePaul) to come and get the excess. You can take a tax deduction for those items.

8. Start pricing items now. Don't wait until the last minute to price your items or it will seem overwhelming to you. When you are going through stuff to put in the sale, price sticker it then. (This saved me a tremendous amount of time.)

We had a garage sale a month ago and sold most of our stockpiles (Friday night 4-7 PM and Saturday morning 6-noon). We made over $600. The stockpile items were in boxes that were placed on an extension ladder (covered in plastic) extended over 2 lawn chairs. We priced items 4/$3 or 5/$5 -- or whatever.

If you price items that way, people will buy that way. They will be reluctant to break up the pricing structure.

We gave each person a plastic grocery bag when they came up. It encouraged them to buy and it prevented them from dropping things. Have plenty of plastic grocery bags if you are selling a lot of small items.

Have plenty of change. We didn't need a whole lot of quarters, etc. because our items were mainly even dollar amounts.

Yes, do advertise in your local paper. It helps tremendously. Our local newspaper gives a garage sale "kit" to anyone having a yard sale that contains orange signs, an ink pen, balloons, and price labels. Put those balloons where people can see them and stop. Put items OUT where people can see when they drive by that you have a serious amount of items to sell.

Be courteous and take down the signs AFTER your sale.

Some local people sell coffee and doughnuts but we never have. Our town has serious "professional" yard salers who go prepared so I think, in our town, it would be a waste of time and energy.

Just some suggestions. I hope that it's helped.

Have a great sale.

I've had a few garage sales. From my expereinces, I have made the most money in the first couple hours of the sales. For the last sale, I scheduled it for 8- 11 and made more than the sale previously. All the customers came early since I created a feeling of urgency (If you don't come early enough, you'll miss it.) I wasn't as exhausted when I was done and I was happy with my earnings.

I've never thought about it, but I think you might actually be right.

There are always a few stragglers, but the vast majority of people do come during the first few hours.

I don't know if all areas are as competitive but here in the lovely Baltimore metro area if you put 8am on a sign you start getting people no later than 7:15am! Some people even write no early birds on the signs cause it's so bad.
