We are moving to Florida this month, and I am going to be flying down with my two sons (2 1/2 and 9 months) and have no idea what to do to make the flight go smooth. I bought a video now player for my 2 1/2 year old and am going to save it to give him on the plane, if he sees it now the thrill may wear off, plus he is a typical 2 year old boy who needs space, he goes crazy being cooped up so this should be interesting. My mother is flying up from Florida just to fly back down with me for help and DH is driving the car separately (he actually wanted all of us, plus our two cats who are coming with- to drive down with him and on a whole other subject my 9 month old refuses to take a bottle, he is still breast fed, he took the bottle 3 or 4 times so he knows how, just stubborn, in 9 months I have breastfed in some funky places so an airplane bathroom may not be to bad!! At least we saved a bundle on formula ).

We have flown many times with our son. Things that I have found to be a great help are: bring small snacks, the pretzels get boring quickly. If he likes reading, maybe buy one of those little cassette players with headphones, and a couple of books on tape for kids. I wrap several small toys and keep them in my bag, when he gets ancy I give him a gift to open. Wrap several times to keep him occupied. If I think of anything else I will post it! :o) Tana

Sometimes they will seat you in bulk head seating so you and your little ones can have some room to move. You can try to request it when you are getting your plane ticket. When I took my baby I breastfed him on the way up in the air so his ears didn't bother him. Although, I have to admit it's a bit tricky to do as there isn't much room in those seats.....lol!. I also brought little treats for him. Another idea is to bring colors and a coloring book. If I think of any more ideas I'll definitely email you. I hope this helps you out somewhat.

Take good care!

Have a great day,
Dawn :)

We are flying Jet Blue and luckily my mom will be with me so I will nto be alone, I know they have tv's so that may keep him occupied. I think I am more concerned with the brestfeeding, I personally have nothing against women who do it out in the open, but i feel uncomfortable doing it in the open, even with a blanket over me. I can get him to drink out of a Propel water bottle (wierd kid!!), if I could find a bottle with a nipple like those bottles or even a bottle that the Propel cap would fit on I would be so happy. It makes a mess though!

4 . "maybe its that regular bottle nipples don't allow as much milk out as those caps?"

Have you tried the nipples with the x ..... or do they have nipples for toddlers (I have no idea, it's been a looong time lol).

Could you get a window seat and your mom hold a blanket up while you breast fed? (I can understand feeling uncomfortable, I did too.) Maybe the airline has a privacy screen for this?

Hope you have a safe ... stress-free trip! (well, at least as little stress as possible :)

It could be more uncomforable for you, and they can be yucky too, LOL.

Try and get him use to the bottle during the time you have left. I know mine both had that problem, but when I decided time is up for breatfeeding I just gave them bottle, bottle, bottle. No more offering of the brest at all. I would pump it into a bottle. It is difficult at first, they will cry, vent and get upset, they might not feed at all, but you gotta let them run hungry even if it seems cruel, but they will understand that is all they have now.

Good luck.

My lil guy has been flying around 8 times a year since a baby and loves it. Now if I can only remember all the stuff we used to have to bring....Right before I had Ed, we had a nine hour delay. I remember the poor folks w/ babies, some running out of stuff. So I always prepare for at least 5-9 hrs at the airport.

**They might actually SLEEP. Mine did alot when he was little. It was great. Don't depend on airline having blankets/pillows. Check w/ airline. I know ATA doesn't have those items anymore. You might need to bring your own, maybe look for a blowup pillow if short on space.

**SNACKS: Not only lil finger foods for them, but for you as well. I would have at least water bottle for each of you (or one large) and have filled before takeoff. You can bring a small cooler if you want for pop/juice/lunchmeat. We generally bring a small meal of sandwiches/chips/drinks. That's b/c we don't get meal vouchers (employee family) if there is a long delay. Some places have long periods of waiting on the tarmack.

**Breastfeed in your seat! Plane bathrooms are awful. If you don't already use one, try seeing if your baby will nurse w/ something covering you. I had a big piece of mesh fabric (like $4 for 2yds at WM) that I used to cover me up when nursing in public. I'm big and noone could see anything. I did this in front of 80 junior high kids. On the plane, if sitting in the window seat, even just a baby blanket should be enough to give you privacy. I never had trouble bfding on the plane. If your baby doesn't suck fingers, bring a bottle for baby to suckle on during takeoff landing. No bfding during takeoff/landing. We also changed diapers in our seats, too. Much easier than in the bathrooms.

**Bring extra dipers/pants/clothes!! Again, no more space than disp. dipes take bring a extras in case of a long delay. Even cloth diaper addicct me, would breakdown and use disp on plane trips. Also bring at least an extra outfit for the lil ones. We thought we were beyond that last year, and 4yo wet himself on the plane. Maybe even an extra shirt for you.
**toys: we brought a bag w/ several different items. Most were inexpensive and wouldn't be missed if forgotten or lost. Many he wouldn't have seen before the trip so they were very exciting. We could rotate as he got bored.

**Think about whether you want to board early or later. Two modes of thought. Boarding early is nice if you have a lot of stuff or are big like me. I liked not worrying about bumping folks as I walked through. Otherwise, think about not boarding early. That will give the kids more time not cooped on the plane. Also are you taking a stroller? I always liked taking our stroller through the airport w/ us. Basically we used it to put all the carry on items in when walking through the airport. You can check them at the gate right before you get on the plane.

**Video now sounds like a great idea. Be sure to bring extra batteries. Don't depend on the airline's TVs, unless it is a screen infront of every seat w/ individual channel control like Jet Blue has. Half of the time my son can't even see the tv on ATA's planes. Plus 80% of the time it is nothing he will watch.

**Get the kids moving while you wait. When in the waiting area, get your kids moving. Take turns w/ your mom taking walks. Cars were a good toy that gave Ed some movement while waiting to board.

** if either of the kids as ecxema, be sure to take some medicine/cream w/ you. Ed always got very itchy on planes. Benedryl, long sleeves/pants, and cream were always packed in carryons. Remember also to have any medicines any of you need in your carryons, not packed.

**Have some napkins/wipes and purell in easy reach.

The worst part of flying w/ kid is security. It seems like they actually pick on families. Like so many of the 9/11 hijackers were moms w/ kids in tow. Ticks me off. If you wear barettes, make sure they are plastic!! Or just wear cloth hair bands for a pony tail. Just that one change in my ponytail, made security much easier. Minimize your jewelry. Have metal objects in your bags not on you. Wear slipon shoes if possible to make taking shoes on/off easier.

I hope you all have a good flight. And big bumps. Ed always likes bumpy landings: "Again, again"

You can't really take everything you wish you could take. The most important for them and you all is to have enough food and drink, diapers, wipes for baby in case you have delays. Believe me it can be never ending the things we wish to take and it can be so frustriting to carry around beig, large and heavy bags as well as trying to cope with small children and all the procedures you need to go through like security, where you have to unload everything, I mean everything stroller and all.

I know that from experience, I used to travel up to 3 times a year since my first was born. She has been traveling since she was 3 months and she got to take 13 flights by the time she was 2 years old, LOL. Then came my second child and I needed to travel with both and alone. Then all the new S**T after 9/11, problems with things you can no longer carry-on, etc. Amount of bags permited and the size of the bags very important, or they will take them away from you, so try to make a list by priorities. Luckily you are travelling with someone that might be able to help you out and the 2 year old is allowed a bag too, even if you have to carry it.

9 . "I did the same thing when my boys were 9 months old! I flew down by myself with the twins and DH drove the moving truck down by himself...."

Just PRAY you dont have a layover or delays! LOL
I had a 2 hour layover in Atlanta that was just about hell on earth with 2 9 month olds...lol
I am glad you will have someone to help you, that will be a blessing for you and the kids :)
Mainly just try to keep them occupied and comfortable. Ask the staff when assigning seats to possibly seat you near the middle--that seems to be the most comfortable place on the plane as far as take off, landing, turbulence, etc...and the noise of the jet engines wont bother the kids so much---it gets very loud sometimes if you sit in the last 1/3 of the plane.
The video now is a good idea, also bring some snacks--finger foods, some juice boxes, etc. as the kids may want something when they are not serving. Books to read to the older one will be good too. Allow your son to stand up on the floor in his seat area when it is ok to do so if you need to, and let him sit by the window if possible to give him something to look at.
If other passengers give you dirty looks, ignore them :) And you will find some around you that will have sympathy for you and may try to help "entertain" the kids a bit :) I was sooo grateful for the lady across the aisle from me on the plane! She played peek a boo and stuff with my boys thru the whole flight! lol
Good luck and have a wonderful time living in FL! :) That is where we moved to also all those yrs ago :)
