Ok, so as I have said, I will be getting my own apartment in a month and a half or so... Yeah!!!
I am looking into renter's insurance and have a few quotes (so far leaning towards Allstate)... My question is, how do you check out a company? Is there a website? A state office or something like that I can call? I have already started over once after leaving my ex (only took some cloths and moved many states away over night) and with being on disability and alone iI can not afford, nor do I want, to start all over again if my apartment was to burn down or I was robbed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

How many times you can submit a claim and deductibles. We had renters insurance and our mountain bikes were stolen ($500 worth). The deductible was $250 and they said that you can only submit 2 claims on the policy where they will pay. We didn't submit one for the fact that we didn't want to not get paid if something more serious happened (fire, flood, etc.). It is something to look into when you shop for renters insurance. BTW, Congrats on the new place!

Because they have discounts.
I purchased my house for 105K I have 150K for accidental to cover the house and get it rebuilt. I have 95K for property to where if things are destroyed they are replaced with brand new items. I pay I think $450 a year. That's on a house though. My house is through allstate, and my autos are through statefarm, (long story short) father had an accident on my insurance(allstate) was raised then moved to esurance to afford insurance, then transferred to state farm with hubby. Even though we live on base and have free insurance to cover our things, we purchased extra insurance through our auto.

had a friends house that burned down last yr, took them over 11 months to get a check for anything even the hotel they paid for

heres my story:
not many know but my house got broken into in feb
i lost over 25k worth of jewlery, dvds, all the electronics, lawn equipment, everything they could carry out! ect ect ect
ITS BEEN A FIGHT!
ive had allstate for 13 yrs for house and auto and this is the 2nd claim i have filed, first was some plumbing issues when i first bought the house
so far its been transfered to 4 different agents and they cant seem to get anything right, not even the date that it happened
just recieved another letter they are doing a 45 day extension
they have gone so far as to imply in not so many words that i ripped myself off
(because of bad credit report, ex owes me big time) and we are currently unemployed
allstate DOES NOT LIKE TO PAY CLAIMS!!!!
i have done some research on the company and im not likeing what i am finding
allstate company is way way over stretched
they currently have over 768 million dollars in libalities and ONLY 1.5 million in cash
its not wonder they dont want to pay any claims!
ive read several stories on the net with actual pictures of documents and there was also a big case against allstate in denton tx that finaly took a 10 yrs and a grandjury to get allstate to pay!

check out these links before you even consider going with allstate SOME WILL SHOCK YOU!
even to the point of allstate hireing private investigators to harrass a former employee that went to the texas insurance board to tell them the LAWS that allstate was breaking!

patio cover we've used them for the damage done to the front of the house when the house across the street burnt and just recently when we turned in the claim on our Jeep ( got paid 3,600 for it AND got to buy it back for $50) it's still in good shape and drivable so ds drives it till he can save for his own car we get discounts because we use them for both home and car and for having them since before we were married(21 years)

NOT SURE IF THEY OFFER IT, BUT IVE GOT A GREAT DEAL ON MY CAR INSURANCE, AND JUST RECENTLY CALLED THEM FOR A QUOTE ON INSURANCE FOR OUR NEW BOAT (NEW TO US...) AND THEIR RATE WAS THE BEST IVE FOUND YET.....

I KNOW THEY ARE NOT LOCAL, BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, BEEN INSURED WITH THEM FOR 10 YEARS AND HAVE HAD 2 ACCIDENTS, NEVER A PROBLEM WITH CLAIMS..... 1ST THING THEY ASKED WHEN I CALLED IN A CLAIM WAS IF I WAS ALLRIGHT AND IF I WAS IN A SAFE PLACE TO REPORT IT. THAT REALLY TOUCHED ME...

HONESTLY, THERE WAS A BAD APARTMENT FIRE NEAR HERE A MONTH AGO, 12 APPARTMENTS BURNED (27 PEOPLE AFFECTED TOTAL), WITH NOT MUCH AT ALL LEFT TO THE STRUCTURE. IT HAS BEEN RULED ARSON, SO NOW THE RENTERS ARE HAVING A HARD TIME COLLECTING, SOME ARE LIVING IN SHELTERS OR HOTELS THIS WHOLE TIME.... ONE COUPLE RETURNED FROM THEIR HONEYMOON EARLIER IN THE EVENING, AND NOW ARE HOMELESS...WHAT A WAY TO START OUT I WOULD DEFINATELY GO FOR REPLACEMENT COVERAGE!!!

with a $500 deductible, for $290 a year (a $600 deduc would have cost $288) and i live in FL so i feel this is a VERY good price especially since they were willing to insure us right at the begining of hurricane season. so, if the big oak that's in our backyard falls into the house, and the tv we own now costs $600 to replace, that's the amount we will get, not the $500 we paid in october 2004 for it, OR the estimated $350 it's worth right now. we got lucky last year as we couldn't afford the ins and nothing bad happened to our home, but i'm taking no chances this year! hth and gl.
