What was your experience like?

I am due in July with a little girl.I have to have a scheduled c-section. I have placenta previa (complete).I am petrified of the c-section.Well actually I am petrified of the IV,the epideral, the section and the recovery. How long before you could do your normal activities after you had the c-section?Any advice that helps the healing along?

Shirley

2 . "Had many IVs, no worse than any other needle stick...once it is in place, it doesn't hurt, and it will make it possible for them to administer drugs quicker for you and not have to poke you over and over to do so. Had 3 epidurals...again, not much worse than a regular stick. (M)"

The hardest part is pulling your knees up and rounding your back with so much in front!! (not painful, just difficult).

No C-section here, but thought I could help on the other 2.

I looked and looked and found no coupons for troll food......SO, I don't feed the trolls!!

4 . "I have had two c-sections... does that make me an expert? LOL"

First one was not planned. I had an epidural in for labor pains, but little girl got stuck on the way out so we had to do a c-section. By then, I was too whooped to care. It was a very quick procedure really. Half an hour in an out. The plus side was that after birth, they massage your uterus to get it to contract. With the epidural in, I didn't feel a thing. They urge you to get out of bed the next day, but may I suggest you be pro-active (and hubby too) with pain relief? With baby #1, they let me self medicate with T3 and ibuprofen. The doctors do leave orders in case you have bad pain, but some nurses are really stingy with the pain medicine, let me tell you. Basically, after they take out the catheter (the day after) they want you to go to the bathroom to make sure you still can.

Second one was planned (though not exactly on the date he ended up coming out!). This time, they used a spinal block. This was almost an immediate sensation of no sensation. I felt a lot more of the pulling and tugging of getting the baby out and I felt the uterus massages (I'll do it myself, thank you!). I was out of bed the next day, but not very fast on my feet.

If I had a third child, most likely by another section, I would tell the doctors that I want an epidural again. I was a lot more comfortable immediately after and during surgery. They push the spinal since it is virtually immediate vs. waiting 20 minutes or so for the epidural to kick in. But believe me, it is worth the wait.

I went home with both kids after 3 days (going home on the fourth) and I could move around, though gingerly. Just don't wait for the pain to come back. You will be more comfortable if you take your pain medicine like clockwork for the first 5 or so days.

You aren't allowed to drive for a few weeks or lift anything heavier than your baby til your check up. (Believe me you won't want to anyway!)

Good luck and if you have any more questions, lemme know.

P.S. If you plan to breastfeed, sometimes with a c-section your milk will come in a little later. However, with baby #2, my milk came in when he was 2 days old, but they said that was because I bf'd the first one).

So mine was totally different than any planned one - sure wish I could have planned mine. I won't go into the details - don't want to scare anyone. Anyway afterwards - the recovery is tough but you can get through it with support from family & friends. The hardest part of my recovery was that you aren't supposed to drive too soon afterwards but I had to since I was in 1 hospital and my son was in another one 40 miles away from me.

My oldest is 22 though, so I might be finished, lol. My first was an emergency, so I was out, my next three were scheduled which I loved. I had a great experience with all of mine. Didn't have to go through labor at all. My best advice is move, the faster you move the faster you heal and the soreness goes away. With my last I was showering by the evening, they could not believe when I was walking the hallways the next day, but I knew it would get me feeling better faster. I never had anyone at home to help after the fact either. With my last the doctor tried to talk me into getting my tubes tied, he kept saying it would not be safe for me to have a 5th c-section, every appointment he would bring it up. It got to be a joke with us. During surgery though when he actually looked at my uterus he said everything looks great, and I now think it would be safe to have another. I also had all my kids stay in the room with me, which was just not done with my first, and took some insisting to have done. The one thing I did not like with my first three is you did not get to spend time with the baby during recovery, so you had this hour just waiting. With my last they brought her into recovery to do the body warming thing, this was great, but she had problems and as it turned out had to go into ICU.

Hi and congradulations on your soon to be little girl. I had my second son by C-section -- it was unplanned. I had natural with first and ended up having emergency c-section during the early part of delivery so I had no pain meds or epidurals before I got rushed in to surgery. So, I can't comment on that part of it. But afterwards, I would say the recovery took longer than with my 1st but I was home in 3 days and walking. My only advice is to walk as soon as you can in the hospital. I had terrible gas pains throughout my body that relieved greatly once I got up and about. Like any surgery the first day is the hardest but it gets better every day from there on..and with a beautiful baby next to you it makes it all worth it. I wish you all the best!

10 . "I had one c-section"

I was 40 yrs. old at the time and it was my one and only pregnancy. The epidural was a cake walk for me except for when it starts to wear off and you have to wait for someone to come and get it going again. During the procedure they do give you other drugs so you don't feel the pain. It just feels like a lot of pressure on your stomach when they are cutting you open and removing the baby. Now, when they did the staples I could feel them pulling my stomach together to staple it and that was a weird feeling. I delivered at 11:00 pm Friday night and didn't have to get out of bed until Sunday morning. The worst part is trying to get in and out of bed. But I was up and walking and went home Monday afternoon. For my age and my only pregnancy I feel mine was a walk in the park. But let me tell you, you will love that epidural, I slept through most of my labor pains.

11 . "Scheduled c-section was wonderful news to me....NO LABOR! YAY!! lol"

When I had the twins I had a scheduled c-section because they were both breech....
I had no trouble with the procedure or the recovery. I was 25 at the time, and in good health prior.
I was in the hospital about 3 days--went home on the day in the evening. I had staples to the incision the first couple days, then they pulled those and used the steri-strips (look like little pcs of tape) and those fell off on their own about a week later.
I had very little pain afterwards as far the incision goes, just alot of "gas-type" pain as air does get into the abdominal cavity during the surgery and it is absorbed by the bowels as well as the bowels getting a bit twisted when the are doing the procedure (I wont get any more graphic than that! lol)
The day after I got home, I was lifting the boys by myself, both at the same time (about 12 lbs total) and doing light housework. No pain after the first 24-36 hrs AT ALL. I had no problems with the incision healing...left a thin, pencil-line type scar I can barely see at the bikini line about 3-4 inches long. :)

I'm so glad you are getting some feedback, because I know that a lot of times fear is just not knowing what something is going to be like. Educating yourself beforehand is really smart!

With my first I was so sure she would be "natural". I was in labor for a long time but after a day and night, I was not progressing and my daughter was showing signs of distress. We made the decision to have the section. I was terrified! I had never been in a hospital before (since when I was born). The surgery itself was not so bad. The worst part was just being seperated from her afterwards while they cleaned her and whatnot.

Second pregnancy I opted for a home birth with 3 midwives. (Three-- hey, I might have "out there ideas", but I am basically a careful woman, LOL). Baby was overdue and BIG (10 lbs 10 oz). I labored all night and all day and again reached a point where nothing was moving forward. We opted to transfer to the hospital. I was being monitered all the way there and everything was okay and baby was good for about the first hour. We were still planning on trying a natural birth. Long story short this was a small and very understaffed hospital. My son began to crash and it took them another hour to get me into surgery. They could tell that he was already gone and they put me out for his birth. When I woke up, the doctor and nurses would not make eye contact with me and it took a long time for them to let my DH in to tell me that Dylan died. Recovering from that one took a long time. Both physically and mentally.

Third time was a scheduled section as I was more than a bit nervous that something terrible could happen again. Madison was born without complications. Recovery was quick (I was in the hospital 2-3 days and keeping up with a 5 year old within the week).

With my 1st and 3rd, I got off the pain meds as fast as possible because I was breastfeeding. I think I was on codine and as soon as I could stand to, I switched to regular tylenol. With Dylan's birth I was trying to stay fogged up afterwards, so that was a completely different experience.

The only thing that stands out in my memory pain wise is that you should be really careful getting out of bed once you are home. I remember I tried getting up and fell backwards and that pain was intense. Other than that, the pain was minimal. And the IV was not bad at all-- just a little pinch. And I would echo getting up and moving around asap-- you will feel so much better. Even tiny little trips will help you heal faster.

HTH. Vanessa
PS-- I am due in December and will have a 4th section (my last). I just turned 36 and comparing it to being 25 and PG-- well let's just say that I do not remember being as tired as I am this time around. For my b-day, I told my family I just wanted sleep and I meant it. :0) Good luck to you...
