We were watching the DVR, an episode of All Rise, probably from last Monday. It is a show pretending to be in LA. The characters were literally hiding in their houses.....boyfriends and girlfriends were talking on the phone/video chat instead of getting together at each others' homes.

I live in the Florida keys, 126 miles of islands. We have a total of 78 cases of the Covid 19 Virus, had 3 deaths, no new cases of sick people for over one month (new positives but nobody sick)....Miami is about 150 miles north and they are infested in their poor areas but not the whole city. The 2 roads that come down from the mainland are closed to essential workers and residents only with cops/sheriffs checking everyone's ID and using our hurricane evacuation stickers. I have never "stayed at home" but since everything is closed, there is not much to do....we go to supermarkets, Dollar Tree....we visit with some friends.....I work at the food bank......we wear masks if asked to but not regularly....need to go to the pet store weekly to get crickets for the lizard....stuff like that. Tons of gardening and the nursery has always been open. Last Monday they opened restaurants 25% capacity and small businesses but nothing personal, like gyms or barbers.

So what is it like where you are?

1 . "LA is "Safer at Home""

We're the 2nd largest city in the country, so our numbers are higher than yours.

BUT...

Mayor Garcetti issued the Safer at Home Order nearly two months ago and, despite our size and population, we have had lower number of cases and deaths BECAUSE we have listened.

Look, the Rector of my church contracted this thing at a conference in Kentucky. She felt unwell about a week later. Her doctor diagnosed it as the flu. She got sicker. Another priest at the Kentucky conference made news when he was diagnosed. She was already feeling like she was at death's door. Her test was being processed when they put her in ICU. It was positive. She was in ICU for about a week.

But others at my church did contract it. A friend who is an artist contracted it. A friend in my community contracted it. Another friend overseas contracted it.

COVID-19 doesn't care how careful you are or how few people you come in contact with. Like with pregnancy, it only takes ONE.

I am working my regular hours remotely. For that I am grateful. I am also doing a deep dive into minimizing my schtuff. That was something I've been working towards regardless.

I am offering things on my Buy Nothing group with contact-free pick-up. I wipe things going out, and wipe things coming in (such as grocery, food and mail deliveries).

I go out to the 7-11 or Vons once a week with mask on for anything I may have been unable to source through delivery, but otherwise, I know I'm Safer at Home.

Purrrz,

Sue

I am also in CA (northern) and have great faith and trust in our governor. Heard a woman (not in CA) yesterday on t he news shrieking about how this is all a scam. Some people still believe that and I dodnt' know what it takes to change their minds-- maybe a family member getting sick? The biggest sacrifice I am making is accepting the fact that I may not see my grandsons (3 and 6) for a year or more.... It's just a possibility. I leave the house as little as possible and always wear a mask--- mainly as a visual alert to myself and others-- a reminder to be careful and vigilant.

3 . "So you two have not visited with a family member or friend for 2 months?"

I used to be an ER RN in NJ (right on the Hudson) and they are probably the 2nd highest hit state.....but they still visit with family and friends, they are just more careful around the elderly....

interesting that we have one nursing home within probably 50 miles and no one there ever got sick.....that would have been awful!

"immediate" relatives would be my son and his wife and two young boys in the S.F. bay area . They visited here in early March and I used to go down there about once a month. My son is staying as informed as possible and so am I . My conclusion from all the contradictory reports and reactions is not that it's being overblown (like some insist) but that it is a completely new thing that needs to be studied and probably will require new medical protocols and innovations. The most worrisome thing to me is the inadequacy of testing-- not jsut availability but they are now reporting that many tests were inaccurate. Some states awarded "no bid' contracts to companies to provide testing without requiring proof that the testing would be accurate. The tests that were given were not accurate. I still hear many people on tv, especially in the administration saying they don't have to wear masks or distance themselves because they have no symptoms. Being asymptomatic has nothing to do with being infected. My dil's sister's boyfriend was sick and had a fever abt a mo. ago and could not get tested because he was too young (not in a vulnerable category) and they didn't have enough tests to be testing the young. So he might have it and might have infected everyone he came in contact with. My son's mil was going to invite her family to her house for Easter but then her sil who is in her 80's and in a care home, went into the ICU and tested positive for corona. Amazingly, she recovered. I think it's a terrifying thing hanging over us and I do not want to gamble with my life or anyone else's.

Has to be some reason why they are "2nd highest hit". What's different in NJ than
in less severely hit states?

I understand that the original virus came in through NYC and Seattle, WA and totally went through those cities.....I see it go through nursing homes......then I see a family of 9 where one person gets sick and nobody else does....our nursing home had multiple positives in the staff but nobody got sick.....According to the CDC, the reason the cities are so affected is because of their poverty neighborhoods who have untreated comorbidities and horrible fast food diets so they are ripe for infections.....read an article last week in one of my nursing journals that the "usual" comorbidities that are in treatment by people who regularly visit their doctor has a better outcome than those who do not have regular medical treatment (sounds like common sense). Miami mostly has the disease in their poor neighborhoods....

don't know if anybody here is a history buff, but every time the plague went through Great Britain, the "rich" people went off to their country houses and the poor people all got sick....seems to constant repeat itself

I'm experiencing this in New York City. Life is nothing as it was, and the longer time passes, the more
people realize that "social distancing" is actually working and is absolutely necessary. Our governor
understands that ALL lives matter and that without everybody's cooperation, we cannot beat this thing.

We wear masks and gloves to be safe whenever we're out. If you ride public transportation of any kind,
it's mandatory that you have a mask on of some kind. You could wear N-95's, surgical masks, scarves or
bandanas to prevent any droplets from spreading into the air. The buses are free for now, and you board
the bus from the back door so you don't contaminate the driver. The trains/subways are free also and
that's thanks to the generosity extended to the essential workers working the front lines in hospitals,
nursing homes, supermarkets, etc. Not many people ride the buses and trains right now. We all have to shelter
in place and stay home. Public transportation is primarily for essential workers going to and from work and
for those who need to go to supermarkets.

There are over 8 million people in NYC. We have long food pantry lines, the streets are eerily quiet, few cars are
on the roads, and there are no planes in the sky. Everything is the opposite of what it was. Pizza shops are open,
Chinese shops are closed. Supermarkets allow limited number of people in at a time and now plexi-glass helps protect
customers and cashiers. Outside, the streets are littered with spent latex gloves, empty bottles of hand sanitizer,
and used face masks. And that's just a little bit of what it's like in NYC.

And that was very quick and masks etc...Have to go to 2 more this Thursday and not happy about that...But have not seen any family members other than one daughter who cooked us a meal and only saw her outside/distanced when she dropped it off. We can't take any chances because husband has health problems and we are trying to stay healthy...Not worth any chances to go out anywhere...So , so far except that very quick dr visit, I have not left my house...Can't drive anymore anyway since I'm loosing my eyesight.

I am uncomfortable with that, but that is what the governor announced last night. How does this make sense?

"Gov. Andy Beshear announced Thursday that Kentucky restaurants can reopen their dining rooms at a limited capacity on May 22 as the state saw 208 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kentucky, bringing the total number of cases in the state above 6,000.
Restaurants will lead phase two of the reopening and will only be allowed to open at 33 percent capacity, plus unlimited outdoor seating that is six feet apart. Beshear said movie theaters and fitness centers will be able to reopen by June 1, campgrounds will be able to reopen by June 11 and some childcare services and outdoor youth sports will be able to reopen on June 15."

My husband is high risk with liver and kidney disease. I don't go out unless it is for groceries, ATM for cash to get the lawn mowed, or to the post office after hours when it is empty to use the kiosk if I have to mail something. I wear my mask and have gloves, Lysol wipes and spray, also hand sanitizer. Most of these items disappeared from the store shelves weeks ago and have never restocked. Of course all of us here I am sure, have our stock piles! :)

My son and grandkids ages 3 and 4 live across town and I have not seen them since this started. His wife works at Walmart, sometimes 7 days, but 5 days a week for sure. So, we agreed to social distancing to be safe even though she sanitizes herself for my son and grandkids' sakes.

I left work on March 24th and have my unemployment. I will be one of the last to return to work as our jobs are people driven with concerts, expos, conventions and basketball. We hope to have a basketball season and start to re-coop revenue.

I miss going out and couponing for the sales and deals, for the finding of new blinkies and tearpads. I still look for the WooHoo's and what is in the Kroger reduced bins when I do make my grocery runs. I found several things marked down that I can use for stocking stuffers and am happy to have found that little bit. In the meantime, I watch my birds and submit bird lists to eBird.org and paint my Kindness rocks that can't be left out in public till all this is past us. I am the admin in our local Kindness rock painting group BlueGrassRockPainters on Facebook, so I am not bored and will just take each day as it comes.

Hope everyone stays safe and well!

I think the quarantine lifestyle is hard on all of us.

Frankly, I think states are opening up too soon. Their numbers are going up, not down.

I am grateful I am able to work from home. I am able to order in as needed. I go out once or twice a week for essentials that I can't source for delivery.

I am not an expert on COVID-19, but I did earn one of my majors in history. Past pandemics have had three waves over two years. This is the first wave. In my opinion, there will not be a "going back to normal" in the immediate future. And there is going to be a world of hurt when jobs simply disappear. The extra $600 of unemployment is expected to only go through July.

Adding to the hurt would be the post office being closed or the proposed rate increases of 400%. Many people are trying to sell from home. This would impact those cottage businesses.

Our world will be different for at least two years. And it may be permanently changed after.

Be well and take care.

Purrrz,

Sue
