she saved a couple dozen donuts, some donut holes and some muffins to take home. Is it like that at all the donut shops/restaurants? Don't they donate to the homeless shelters or somewhere? I'm really shocked about this.

Possibly the store hasn't been approached by a group that wants them?
I volunteer at the local Ronald McDonald House. We send our house driver 3x/week to pick up donuts. However, we have to pick them up, the bakery does not deliver them.
