3 . "Do you have a quilt frame?"

My mom has made alot of quilts & I've helped her. You will need to lay the backing 1st, lay the batting flat & even over that & then the top over the batting. Then you would "tie" it before sewing the ends together. To "tie" it means to use about an inch & a half to 2" long pieces of yarn or a thick, heavy-duty thread which helps hold the batting in place & to the bottom & top. You space out the "ties" to be about a foot apart on all sides. To "tie" it, you would thread the needle w/the yarn/thick thread pieces. Then, run the needle down thru the top, thru the bottom so half of the yarn remains on the top. Bring the needle back thru the bottom up thru the top (just as if you're sewing), remove the needle & tie the yarn into a knot. Trim any uneven "ties". It helps alot if you have a quilt frame as you can use thumb tacks to hold all 3 layers in place while you do "tie" it..... Then, you can sew the ends together HTH some. ;)

I dont have a quilting frame but was thinking of getting one if i can manage to get this quilt together, lol.

I was planning on using my sewing machine to put it together but thought i should put some hand stitches in it first to hold it in place. Have a question about the yard do you take it out when you get it all together? So i do the outside first and then the inside? Mine is done in quilt blocks so can i just sew around each of the quilt blocks to hold it all in place or do i need to do a little more than that. Good thing this isnt a big quilt i figured for my first one i better do something small or i would get way to confused. LOL not that im not already that way. But im going to get this done im actually making it for dh's grandma it has all the months of the year on it that i embroidered. I may actually try to figure out next how to use my maching to embroider but one thing at a time, I just bought my first sewing machine the day after thanksgiving so i have alot to teach my self. I havent used a sewing machine since iwas in highschool, lol

6 . "Inside....."

If you're going to attempt to do bigger quilts at some point, you may want to invest in a quilt frame as it helps keep all the layers in place, & from bunching, while "tying" so it is definitely alot easier. Takes up alot of room tho. ;) You could sew at block section to keep all the layers in place but it would be alot easier & faster if you were to just "tie" it cuz you will otherwise likely have to sew each block section by hand. Very painstaking & time-consuming. If you want, you could put a "tie" in the middle of each block section but again, it might be faster & easier to just "tie" at every 2nd or 3rd block section. And you want to do the inside, or "tying" 1st, before you sew all 3 of the outside ends together cuz if you use a sewing machine to do it, the machine will "pull" everytime the machine's needle goes down so it'll bunch, & you don't want that. I recommend "tying" w/yarn pieces cuz yarn is much more durable than thread, especially when it comes to the final task of sewing the ends together on a machine, & washing. And yes, you will want to leave the yarn "ties" in place once it's all completed. Another tip: NEVER wash anything until it's completely finished & especially if you've already measured out the approximate size of the blocks & the quilt (top & bottom). IF the material you're using for the top of the quilt is NOT new (say it's odds & ends material pieces you've picked up at a garage sale & it's kind of smelly), you can wash that material but BEFORE you've measured out the approx. size of the blocks & the quilt. NEVER wash the material top once the blocks are sewn together due to the risk of shrinkage, thus a variation in the size of both the blocks & the quilt top when attaching it to the batting & backing. Once a quilt is completely finished, it is then also ok to wash it if you want, but if giving it as a gift, I recommend using a front load washing machine, just in case. In other words, let the recipient of the quilt take the chance of washing it in their own washing machine. ;)
I have to hand it to you cuz it takes ALOT of patience to put something like this together. My mom has done all kinds of sewing & embroidery since she was a little girl, mostly by hand, so I grew up seeing 1st hand just how much time, effort & love goes into making just 1 quilt, even a baby quilt. I think working on the top is the most painstaking part, especially when it comes to measuring, cutting & sewing all the blocks together. Ooof! I'm afraid I do not have the patience for that. However, I have the utmost respect & appreciation for anyone who does this cuz sewing anything other than a button or a small rip is NOT my cup of tea so a quilt would be way out of my league. You must care alot about your dh's grandma & I've no doubt she will love & treasure it immensely as it's one of the most priceless gifts you can give someone. ;)

I'm sure it will be just beautiful! :)
I'm always in such awe when I see the finished work my mom does. I'm the ONLY 1 in my family that she hasn't made a quilt for. LOL Seriously, I've told her that as beautiful as they are & altho I greatly appreciate & respect all that she puts into one, I cannot do that to her cuz like I said, I've seen 1st hand just how much time & effort she puts into just 1, & nobody else has seen all that. I don't have the heart to make her do that just for me. ;)
