Okay,,,so really trying not to stress out about this....

My daughter, Olivia who is five goes to a fantastic preschool....there are quite a lot of children in her class...I'm close with her teachers and the director of the of school. Anyway, yesterday we got a notice that a child in her class has been diagnosed with scabies.....I realize that it's certainly not the end of the world, and that literally anyone can get it...but I'm a FREAK when it comes to stuff like this....so I brought her to the pediatrician who checked her out and said all is well....I've washed everything I can get my hands on, etc...

Anyone know of any other preventative measures I can take to ensure she doesn't get it???? 1|1|Yikes! How scary. Bumpin for you to get answers|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|22:39:26|04/15/2009|

The director literally threw out all of her adorable and expensive large throw rugs....threw out all of the stuffed animals, had the entire staff santizing the school....the child that was diagnosed with it is now out of the school for a week (I'm sure it's tough on their parents to miss a week of work),,,,but thankfully it's not deadly, and it is curable...it's just me and my hypercondria reacting to it.....

I actually worked with the director this morning on how the school can help keep the kids sleeping materials more sanitized. She loved my idea (as I purchased a small tote that is completed sealed with a lid and a small handle..that can accomodate a nice soft blanket and small pillow for naptime) since it's stackable and small....the director went out and bought 30 of the same kind for the other children and she is talking to the other parents about this to ensure each child has their sleeping materials in a secure and Completely SEALED container to help eliminate future outbreaks. (the old system was the kids would put their pillow and blanket in one of those really large oversized ziploc bags...but the parents never replaced the bags and so they didn't seal...so the kids sleeping stuff would be exposed to other children's.....this system will ensure a more sanitized storage of sleep items. Now the parents just have to make sure they provide a small pillow and a blanket. Totally doable since the blanket I bought for Olivia was a pretty large soft Hannah Montage Blanket and a nice soft round pillow...she loves it and it fits the tote perfectly.

I hope Olivia doesn't get them and hopefully it was an isolated incident. Below is a link with all sorts of info about them. It does say, that if it's the first time someone has been infected, it can take up to two months before they show symptoms and such. Hugs, Rebekka

treating items for scabies mites is basically the same as treating items for head lice. please tell her to STOP throwing things away.......... i understand that this is scarey but it should be treated as you would head lice, everything can be saved. hth

i found this on the internet for you:

The scabies mite can live up to about 36 hours without human body contact, which means that scabies can also be spread by contact with clothes, bed linens, and household articles.1 To make sure that all scabies mites are killed, follow these steps:

Immediately after starting treatment for scabies, clean all the affected person's bedding and the clothing that he or she has worn within the past 2 to 3 days (48 to 72 hours).1 Either wash all items in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer, or dry-clean them.
Any items that cannot be washed or dry-cleaned must be placed in a closed plastic bag for at least 7 days.
It is not necessary to make extra cleaning efforts, such as washing the bedding daily or washing walls, floors, or furniture. The exception is for people who have crusted (Norwegian) scabies: Do wash the bedding and clothing daily while this form of scabies is being treated.
