Ok, things are looking bleak here, and I will lose my Health insurance on August 19th, the day I lose my job. (My plant is shutting down) Thru Cobra my insurance will be $700 a month for myself and DH. It will be more thru his employer (They carry the highest blue cross, blue shield and Major medical at about $800 a month, & it doesnt include prescription coverage.) I have looked for heath insurance, most will not even consider me, as of just having the gall bladder surgery, even if they do the deductibles are unreal! $1000 and up!! And none include Prescription coverage, which I really need since I take a pill for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Acid reflux daily.
Now I am looking into Public Assistance, at least for our Medical if we can. I only make $6.65 at my job, so what I will get for unemployment will not be very much, and our savings has been delpeated, since I ahve been off with the Gall bladder problems since the beginning of may. The insurance I do have only covers 80% after my $200 deductible, so that still is not that great..
If anyone is on Medical Assistance, please email me privately if you wish. We do not have any children, can we still qualify? I looked on the website and the way it says, the house doesnt count (We own a 1993 mobile home) and our cars are both older, a 1993 Mazda MX-6 with almost 200,000 miles on it and my 1989 Honda Accord with 120,000 miles on it. Together they are only worth about $1150 Kelley Blue book trade in value. It says $2000 worth of items to be owned. I do have life insurance policies on us. I can not remember the values right now, But not sure I will be able to keep up with the premiums. But we each have 2, (I have 3, but will lose that also on Aug 19th) approx. $45,000 each We have nothing else. No 401K (My husband has 1, but there is only $30 left in it) and no saving, bonds or anything like that. Can we qualify? He is only working part time right now, so things arent looking too great. I have been looking for answers, but I am not finding any, especially in the health insurance dept.
Food stamps? same qualifications? Different? I know someone posted a table awhile ago, and I wish I would have saved the link! So if anyone has it, I would really appreciate it. Even if it is $10, just enough for milk and bread, would be a help. Anything I can get free or extremely cheap with coupons, I have been and storing it or selling it for extra money.

PLEASE do not see this as me asking for hand outs, as I am not. I just need info on where I can go, as I know resources are limited for owning a house, even if it is a trailer (We do not even own the land, we rent that) and for not having any kids. Someone told my mom there is a chip for adults, but I couldnt find it. Also looking for that info, since by the End of October my mom is going to be in the Same boat as her Plant (Boboli) is also closing down. As you can see the job force here isnt too great. Going to a job fair tomorrow, so hopefully I can get some insight. they are also having one at my work. TY For reading, and TY in advance to anyone with info. You guys are always the best.

Here in Ohio it is very difficult for a childless couple to get assistance, which is very unfortunate. I know this because my SIL tried to apply for assistance awhile back, and they don't have any children--she wasn't working, only her DH was, they only had 1 older vehicle, and rented their home, no major possessions. They still didn't qualify, she was told.

I can't really speak for your area, though. All I can suggest is that you take every bit of documentation that you have of your financial situation with you when you go to apply--all of your bills, bank statements, a statment from that 401K, print-outs showing the value of your vehicles, everything you can think of. But, even though your medical bills are high and you obviously need medical and prescription coverage, they won't take that into consideration, most likely--they have to go by their formulas and charts and all that to determine who gets assistance, and those formulas and charts don't take your medical problems into consideration most of the time (unless you have a disability or you are pregnant or some other extenuating circumstance).

Basically, all you can really do is call your county welfare office and get an appointment to speak to a caseworker. If your financial situation fits into their charts, you'll get assistance; if not, you won't. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but it is difficult for a childless couple to get help. I wish you luck and if there is anything I can help with, feel free to email me.

:) Michelle

the country? If so, make SURE you and the other workers fight to get the company to file the right forms and all that jazz so you can all take advantage of the FREE schooling etc that would be available for it! They have to file the correct stuff in order for the workers to get that opportunity. My plant tried to get out of doing that..we all fought it and did finally get access to the free schooling and counseling etc that was legally available to us do to those circumstances of the plant moving jobs out of country. I too lost my job of 12 yrs after they took it out of the country for cheaper labor. We weren't even union either so that didn't factor into any of it. Over 600 people lost their jobs here and this is a very rural area so that not only hurt the workers and their family, but all the local businesses here that depended on those people for business/income locally.
We went from 2 very good incomes w/ nice stock etc portfolios to absolutely 'zip'. COBRA is a joke!! No one I have ever known could afford it after losing their job..it's ridiculous!
You may be eligible for food panty asstance or other things in your area. If you get very desperate you can get one time help from places like Salvation Army etc also to help w/ gas or electric payments. If you live in a larger city area, there are many more places to look for help then in rural areas. Check your phone book and call..call..call! I found out you really DO have to 'help yourself' to find help. If you call a agency and get refused, ASK them if they know of other places that could help you out. Keep doing this with all your calls and eventually you will find other places that help too. Ask neighbors, friends, etc too if they know of services etc that could help you out. Again, you have to be very dilegent and keep asking/phoning around to find places to help you. Sad, but true.
Good luck and hope things look up for you soon!

I have noticed on TV lately that some of the makers are offering help to people. It can't hurt to call them and see what they say.

Thanks!

Been there, so I know a few things about "the system". First start with the local dept of human services but don't stop there. Especially if they are not much help. There are programs (sometimes churches, non profits, etc) that are out there but you have to search for them. The welfare office should have a list of local agencies that may be able to help. One thing they really like to do is send you to someone else (who will probably turn around and send you to a different place, but I digress...) You also have to consider using food banks for a little while since any money you have will be going to survival. Again these are never in just one place, nor could anyone live on the food that you get from one (well maybe you'll get 2-3 days of food, but I've found that it is hard to find ones that actually give healthy food, fresh veggies and fruits, milk, etc.) Some will have rules that are set in stone (one food box per family per month and they may be connected to other pantrys so that that one box may be the only one you can get from most of the food resources in your area. Again, I suggest that persistance is key and use what is available if you need it. That is what these programs are for.

My experience is that it is very tough to get cash assistance, (actually you won't qualify for it if you are getting unemployment) but they are more generous with medical coverage. If you apply and are turned down, tell them you want a hearing. I've learned that most of the time this works in your favor... You should qualify for some foodstamps (I think, although it varies from state to state) with unemployment. It won't be a lot (I'm trying to remember what we got when Dh was on unemployment and I think for our family of 4 it was somewhere around $150 a month, but when he was laid off he was making $15 a hour and so the salary was different. Be sure to check.

Another thing is to look for any programs that offer assistance w/ electricity. There is one that is a federal program (I think but I could be wrong) that helps with a small portion of your telephone bill (up to $14 a month).

Basically this will not be easy. You'll be "working" to get help for your family. Between filling out form after form and talking to people, you will see that it will take a little time, but do not give up and don't get discouraged. I hope that you both get back on your feet soon-- I know what a struggle it can be.

b/cause you may qualify for the medical card. I worked at a Dollar General (I was single then, though) making barely over minimum wage when I had some medical expenses and no insurance. They covered my medical bills, even went back a few months worth, with no problems. All I had at the time was a car and one savings bond. Nothing else, really. I was living at home at the time. They will tell you what you can and can't qualify for. Also call the unemployment office or check into your local colleges to see if they have any free adult education courses. I went there once to see if they could help me get a better job. Keep your chin up, I know it is hard sometimes. Maybe you could talk to your pastor/priest/rabbi (if you have one) privately to see he knows of any resources to help you.

Got my staples out today and can go back to work on the 18th of July!! YIPPEE!!!

I am not very worried about the food or cash assistance right now. I have more than enough stockpiled to keep us going for at least 6 months if not more, besides staples (Milk, Bread, Eggs)! And I also have pleanty of HBA necessities, so we are set there!! TY all for the info, as I know without children, it is gonna be a struggle. But ty for all the insight, as I am going to ask when the welfare office comes to meet with us at work about our options. At least that is 1 thing the company is doing for us! They are bringing in Unemployment, Welfare, and a whole bunch of other places, to help us with the resourses and understand what we need to do when the company closes its doors!

Our company is not going overseas. There are ALOT of Taylor Corporation Companies in the US. We could have transferred, but there is no way I could leave my family! I hated being to hours away by car let along 2000 miles. Just would never be able to deal with that! I am going to a Job fair tomorrow, both my mom and I, so I can see what is out there right now. I can not apply right now, until Our work is done or I will not get my 2 weeks severence pay.

TY all!! Also does anyone know of the assistance for new windows, doors and insulating? Is that thru PP&L?? Some0one told me about the program, but wasnt sure who was offering it. TY All again, I knew you guys would help me with the info!! ~Hugs~ Kandy
