Look in your goverm=nment pages of the phone book or call a day care and ask who inspects them. I know here, I can access the records for my son's daycare online and see exactly what has been going on as far as inspections, complaints, violations, etc.
When you find some you think you like, drop by unannounced a few times, different days, different times of day (especially first thing in the morning and the middle of the day) to see how things are going. I did that for a week or two and got a really good idea of what went on. One place dropped out of the running from a drop in visit.
Also, most daycares will give you a list of parents willing to discuss the daycare and their experiences there.
