"Ideas about finding furniture on the curb any thoughts. Me and my husband always loved to go to garage sales and found wonderful items. HOwever I was never shy if we were passing in the street and found a piece of furniture. I have found many wonderful pieces that I have striped the paint and repainted, does anyone else do this. Or am I the only one hope not. JOann"

I guess I will continue I simply love garage sales and anything old nothing modern. I love to find old wooden pieces the most. I also love old linens and old fine china. There is nothing like drinking tea in a thin old cup and saucer. Ok there so any thoughts on the subject feel free.

instead of it going to the landfill. I have gotten a heavy antique wooden desk,I use that for my computer desk, have found rubbermaid bins(use those for my biz)- have also found for my niece a designer brand double stroller, and playpen in great condition, oh and a metal file cabinet...if I see something outside and I can't use it, I will pick it up anyway and find it a new home, there is always somebody that can use things.
** I love old things also, furnature etc, they just don't make the modern stuff like the old days, and I agree with the tea cups & saucers, something very elegant, rich about drinking out of those kinda things, I often wonder who owned them before and who the person was, I gather someone probably much like ourself, that they noticed how special these items can be and treasured them.

I've picked up many things small and large, one mans trash is another mans treasure!

My last find was a metal futon frame that I found laying outside against the recycle dumpster!
They even had the bots and nuts in a plastic bag attached. I didn't need it but took it to the thrift store that is run by the shelter. Either they can use it or sell it to help buy something else.

The last find that was one of my best was one of my neighbors down the street that was moving had pushed a bubble gum pink painted chest of drawers to the curb. As soon as I passed it I slammed on brakes and backed up. I'm so glad someone wasn't behind me! It was all I could do to get it in my car by myself because you would never believe that it was almost near perfect match (except the hardware) to one my mother bought at and antique auction about 15 years earlier that I took to college with me and I still love and use daily. I was on my way to work that morning so I had to go back to my house and wrestle it in the house cause it was sticking out of my Jeep and I couldn't drive to work and park at work with that hanging out of my car. Later my father and I stripped off at least 10 layers of many different colors of paint then stained it to match the other one I have and I now have an almost matching pair of nice antique solid oak chest of drawers!

I learned junkin early in life! When I grew up in the burbs of Chicago they used to have "junk days" this is a week in which you can throw out any and all junk you no longer wanted. Then they allowed it to sit at your curb for a few days to a week and it was free pickins before the trash truck would come to get what may be left. My father and his friends used to take a day or two off work and go "junkin". My family has many good "junktiques". From oak tables, chairs, chest of drawers, metal picnic table and chairs, etc. That was the good old days, you just don't find good junk like that much anymore for free unless you happen to luck up on something.

I stumble upon a few things every now and then but not like years ago. I've gotten a few gas grill tanks at the curb this year. You can't put them on a moving truck so people put them out for the garbage man and the garbage man won't take them either but I sure as heck will and most have been nearly full. I have plenty of extras now and so do my parents and a few friends, we will never run out of gas for the bbq or the turkey cooker that's for sure!

Happy junkin' everyone!

2 years ago I saw a mattress that looked new. I only wanted it for my daybed (My 2 cats bed lol) it was infestedddd baddddlllyyyy with fleas. I had to get my entire house exterminated because I couldnt get rid of them. So I no longer get furniture or bedding, basically anything that can not be washed, unless I know where it is coming from, even if on freecycle, unless I ask them if it is from a pet free home.

I always love City cleanup, just to drive along the streets and see what people are getting rid of! I have gotten Lawn Furniture, My Kitchen Chairs (I have the white tile and wood FarmHouse Table that I got at a yardsale for $10, then found 2 chairs out for clean up, still searching for the other 2 lol) Microwave Cart, coffee table, end tables, Vacuum, Surround sound speakers, Christmas lights and decorations, and ohhhh so much more!

When I have something I no longer want, I put it out in my driveway with a free sign on it.. nothing ever makes it to trash day lol! (Except the corner to my sectional that my cat used as a scratching post.. grr) I have given away a washer and dryer (MY mom bought us a new set for our anniversary) Computer Chair, Couch, Vacuums and alot more.. the funniest was seeing 5 guys carrying a couch down the street lol! But at least someone got use out of it!

Im keeping an eye out for a dresser, need a tall one, and when i priced them i nearly died!

Oh also yard sales are great.. this summer we got a new fireplace insert that was used a few times and looked new, paid $30 (Same one at lowes was $299) I wasnt too keen as it was a brushed brass finish and didnt match the rest... and then on Freecycle someone was giving away a fireplace screen and set that was brass so now it all matches! And the screen retails for about $90 as I was looking into a new one as the old one was in bad shape. Definately find some awesome bargains, and awesome things for cheap or free!

Who made tons of $$$ doing this! We live in a college town and so when students move "back home" they usually leave tons of stuff. This family would drive around picking up stuff. Then the kids would help clean it up, wash it ect. Then each summer they would have a HUGE yard sale. I mean HUGE! You name it they had it... they really cleaned, fixed, and sorted the stuff. Always a organized sale with great deals. The whole family worked at this whole thing, they had little education but worked hard and were doing all the right things. The father said it paid for back to school and heating bills. Was one of the nicest people I ever knew.

I my lawnmower that I picked up 7 seasons ago dumpsterside is still running great. When I needed a part for it I just happened to see my neibor tossing out a similar one so free parts also. I will pickup vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers and things like that If i can,t fix them and give/sell them I recycle the parts. Lots of copper in eletrical things and the aluminum heads off lawnmowers can add up quick.
